I am bipolar as well and have also been diagnosed with crohn's disease but I'm not too sure on that one (you'll see why later).

As you would know, no meds really helped (at least not much) - either illness.

Anyways, to get to the point, about 5 years ago, a family that im close to recommended that i see their doctor, who is a traditional western doc that also practices natural medicine. She was able to tell me very specifically what foods i personally should avoid to reduce any flare ups. She also gave me a series of (painful) injections directly into my intestines/colon and they WORKED! For the first time in over a decade I wasnt in the bathroom every second. Her visits were really expensive - sometimes I'd pay $2000 for the visit and shots.

So now to last year, had a terrible breakdown (which is so strange because I had a fling with a 17 year old myself. I think this is why your post caught my attention) and of course the depression and sleeping the entire day, could do nothing for myself. Very dissassociated but could somehow come alive in the pm to go clubbing. crashed bad bad bad and started meds again which I think was worse that the depression. I was determined to stay on them though.

Till it occured to me while at my TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) Doctor to ask what the TCM philosophy is on mental illnessess, specifically bipolar disorder. While they don't recognize it by name, they do believe that emotional and mental problems have physical manifestations and one of mine was what other docs diagnosed as crohns.

Switching to his natural "prescriptions" HAVE MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE. Noticable within 2 or three days! I'm actually tearing up writing this. I HAVE NO AWFUL SIDE EFFECTS. I have energy. I can wake up earlier on a morning. I feel like myself. Im not in a haze. No stomach trouble. I love that I can function during the day. I hate myself when i sleep all the time. I wasnt trying to be lazy. My body was always so tired. I can play with my kids, cook. I can think and analyse my behaviour alot better.

about a week ago, I realized I was crying a bit again, getting a bit angry, couldn't get up early anymore (no where near as bad as before) - went back to him and he gave me 3 days of herbs(?) to make a brew to supplement the pills i take. Worked right away again.

Now it doesnt make you perfect. And you still need to find the right formula for you AT THAT TIME. Be alert to any changes. And I still think therapy is necessary.

Of course, Im not advising you. But sharing my experience so you dont give up. We all want to be well. I really wish you the best.
