Hi Sandy,

Welcome to HealingWell and the bipolar board. You are welcome here. We have plenty of spouses who post here. However, please keep in mind that this is a bipolar peer support board and many of the members (myself included) have bipolar. It's not a forum for people to simply vent about the disease or people with it. That said -- post away!

I am new here also and have a bipolar husband. He is in a severely depressed state right now and has been for about 3 months. He is on Zyprexa and just started Lithium 2 weeks ago so we are hoping that it will work for him soon. He has tried many different meds and they dont seem to work. He has been suicidal has gone to emergency but didnt stay overnight. I dont know what else to do for him. The only other thing would be to have him committed for a period of time and dont know if he would do that. Please email me if you want to talk or vent.

Welcome to HealingWell and to the bipolar board. I'm sorry to hear your husband is struggling so hard right now. I hope the lithium helps. Therapy is invaluable too. How does he feel about that?

Unfortunately, you can't really have someone committed. Sometimes the police will determine that an individual needs to be held in a mental health institution if they are an immediate danger to themselves or others, but largely, going to the hospital is voluntary. It really does help if he's in a critical state. Have you discussed it with him? Why didn't they send him to the hospital when he went to the ER?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

The last time he went to the emergency when he was suicidal he told them he was feeling better and just wanted to go home. He agreed to go to partial hospitalization but then we found out the next day we would have to pay a $300 deductible so he was unable to attend. Plus he tried that before and said it didnt really help him. He said they were broken up in groups and everyone shared their stories and was hard to hear everyone elses problems. Made him more depressed. He is in therapy and goes to a psyciatrist for meds. about a year ago he went through a manic state which was very hard on both of us. He got better for about 5 months and now has been very depressed. He was laid off and is on unemployment. Also has applied for disability because he cant work and is waiting to hear back about that. He says he is so depressed thinking he may not get disability and his unemployment will run out so financially we will go down hill. I love him very much. We have been married for 18 years and have an 18 year old son. It is so hard to see him like this. It tears me up inside.
