Adding lithium to lamictal and seroquel XR made a BIG difference in my rapid cycling. I don't know why your Dr. would hesitate. It's very safe when monitored with bloodwork. It has been used for a long, long time compared to other meds. Dr's know a lot about it.
Tell him that you've met someone with the same group of disorders and on lamictal and seroquel, and when her Dr. added lithium, her rapid cycling completely stopped. ;) I used knowledge I gained here to suggest something to my Dr., he thought is was a fair, logical idea and let me try it! And it worked! Maybe you will get lucky. :)
I think the Doctors I've encountered are over worked and are hesitant to commit to lithium because of the monthly blood work.
But it's a no brainer for me. It has been used the longest, has the most research behind it. I'm desperate for a way to manage my agitation and what I believe to be rapid cycling. My tolerance to benzos is pretty high right now. They used to be my safety net.
I think one of the problems is I either present as stable and calm (I've learned to act that way since a child), or I'm crying because I wait until I'm depressed to seek help. The doctors don't see me when I'm researching a new project for work for hours until 4 in the morning even though I haven't even gotten dressed for the day.
They don't see me shopping when I should be saving. They don't see how agitation is slowly destroying my relationship with my husband.
I might have more luck this time because I'm seeing a family doctor and he might be willing to accept any suggestion to get me stable while I'm on a waiting list for another psychiatrist.
