I'm trying to get my daughter to get in a budget and watch with her spending. She was just diagnosed as BP I. I want her to save her money and get the things she needs and pay back us for what she borrowed. Her grandma gave her $40 and her cousin to do whatever they wanted. She wanted to go to Kennywood with boyfriend but didn't think she would have the money. Well now she has the money and she could have gone and bought it but instead she went to the mall. I hope she didn't get her nails done for the up teenth time because it lasts for barely a week and then bites them off. I need her to get it under control before she is off on her own and gets in big trouble. It's not a laughing matter and I know she's tired of hearing me say the same thing but she still does it. AAH!!!!

Well I did get to talk to her about and it ended terribly. We ended up fighting and I left crying. She cleaned her room like I asked but she also left to her friends house. I let her because I just wanted space. She didn't say sorry or try to fix it. She just wants me to let her fail and then she will learn. I told that why can't she just try to listen and it wouldn't be so hard. When she crashes who is there to pick her up and wipe her up again. ME!!! I know that's my job as a parent but it's also my job to steer her in the right path and to make sure she will be good when it's time for her to be on her own. She gets lazy at night and forgets to take her meds and then forgets to put in her retainer. I can't win. We have our good moments like this past Friday and then it goes to hell in a hand basket. I guess that is what I get for having a teenager and also dealing with BP. Man is it hard sometimes.

Oh Lis, I'm sooo sorry for how things went.

Teenagers can sometimes be stubborn when it comes to spending. They sometimes spend without thinking about it. Hopefully she will learn from her mistakes.

I did this and I still have a bad habit of spending more than I should sometimes. Budgeting is not one of my strong skills but I see the importance of it now since I have my car loan and I need to help out in the house since dad passed.

You are right in teaching her to spend wisely from now. I hope she will be see that you are only trying to teach her a valuable lesson regarding spending and come around.

I don't know. She is stubborn like me and just wants to fight sometimes. I just wish she could be in my shoes for awhile and see where I'm coming from. Then maybe she would see what I'm trying to save her from. Well maybe her being at her friends will give her some space and she will be different tomorrow. If not then I will have to wait to our session with the NP and then maybe I will get a little insight from her.

Many teenagers are very difficult to deal with. I have had three now to go through those trying days. Each was different, so lessons learned from one didn't necessarily apply to another. I know this seems to be a trend in general because others I work with have kids of the same age, and the stories they tell me could apply to experiences with my own. Money always seemed to be an issue, except with daughter, who was generally frugal. My boys have little understanding of the value of a dollar, why one should save, etc. My older son is finally getting some real life lessons about money, lessons his parents just could not instill in him. It is tough, so I feel for you. - Taygeta

Thanks Taygeta. I just wish she would understand how much it hurts me when we fight like this. She will never know until she has her own children. That's how I was.
