Leah,
There is no study that "proves" Prozac or any antidepressant or drug for that matter causes people to commit suicide. That's common sense. Depressed people often commit suicide, even when they are taking an AD, esp if it doesn't work for them on the first try; they lose hope. The incidence of suicide on Prozac or any other SSRI, trycylic, SNRI, etc. is extremely low.
We are talking about SSRI treatment in bipolar disorder on this board, not depression, which is what your friend is referring to. If you have a copy of the article, please cut/paste or give us the link, I would like to read it.
SSRI use in BP is very harmful almost every time, esp without a mood stabilizer. Reason: it causes serotonin to last longer, therefore lifting a person's mood. That usually triggers mania/hypomania in us, which is devastating, as you should know if you are bipolar. Bipolars usually only go for help when they are depressed, therefore, the doctor prescribes an antidepressant, SSRI. This triggers mania, which we love when we don't know any better, so no complaints and we go on to do all the dangerous things we do when hypo/manic. Even with mood stabilizers they usually cause problems with hypomania, panic attacks, severe anxiety, paranoia, the list goes on.
A doctor was on here a couple of months ago to inform us that now all SSRIs are required by the FDA to have a warning to the prescribing doctors to screen carefully for the possibility that the patient is bipolar first because of the problems they usually cause. They are simply not recommended for us.
A few of us do ok on them; if on enough mood stabilizer and/or antispychotic to block the manic tendency, but even then, some BPs will react. Everyone is different.
And people here have every right to discuss their experiences with them and should be encouraged to do so. This is a discussion board after all. Calling people "ignorant" is inflammatory and inaccurate. If common sense were the key to treating bipolar disorder, we would all be well on the same meds.
