The stigma of mental illness in America isn't what it used to be. And that includes the stigma against mental illness at the workplace.
Many supervisors these days have a better understanding of this terrible illness. Lots of them know that it's a true illness. They know that if employees working under them have this illness, it's not their fault.
Years ago I was working at an assisted living home. I was having issues with bipolar disorder during that time. Finally, I had to let my boss know that it was going to be a while before I could return to work because I was going into the hospital.
When I told him this, he told me that he understood. And he did. He also told me that my job would be there once I had recovered and left the hospital.
This boss isn't the only one who understands. Their's lots of bosses out there who are good to work for and know that mental illness doesn't make a good employee any less valuable.
Sometimes i am me (HT)...

Good topic. The stigma is lessening, more profile acceptance is being evidenced. Some employers still discriminate, sadly....but it is getting better, in the country I reside in, Australia.
Thx for sharing. HT

This is good! Some employers are very understanding when it comes to mental illness.
Unfortunately, as HT said there are still many who discriminate and do not care to understand.
I am glad your boss was very understanding.
I hope that more people (not just employers) will be aware and understanding of these situations not just in America, but throughout the world.
