I just thought I'd check in here...I'm waiting and waiting for Wellbutrin to kick in. My son (17) has been on it for 2 weeks for severe depression.

He's on 150mg (XL). Is that a lot or the normal dosage?? How much time should I give it???

This waiting game is wearing us out!

3 weeks+ now and no change. Homebound, no school, no church I can bearly get him to his Psychologist's office.

It sounds like you really need to speak to his doc about this. I know it takes weeks for meds to kick in but I think you should have seen some sort of change in him. Give them a call and see what they suggest.

Thank you! It's always nice when people reply.

I talked to my son's doctor's receptionist hoping I could avoid an appointment (1 1/2 to 2 hour wait in a crowded waiting room full of mentally ill people, uggh!!) just to ask a simple question! She said she'd check with the doctor and get back with me...3 days later she called and said he ok'd my son's taking 300mg instead of just 150mgs. He said to give it another 2 weeks and then if there's still no change then we'll make an appointment to talk about another medication.

Funny, there's no way to concretely measure "improvement", it's so subjective! It makes this illness SO tricky when you're the caregiver for a minor. It's not like the symptoms are visual and measurable. It's not like bang you're depressed or BANG your manic! It's so subtle in the beginning...he smiles once and my heart JUMPS! Maybe he's getting better! But then he goes back to being quiet and I wonder and wonder...So we wait and wait...

Yeah I know where your coming from , but unfortunately the only person who can assess how much benifit the meds are giving is the person who is taking them. And along with that , every case is individual , your son will react differently to the med than Mr.X , and need a different dose than Mrs.Y - unfortunately it's down to trial and error. BUT I know you and your son will get through this - never give up , you'll get to that happy place - I'm cheering you both on yeah

Keep smilin', sometimes that's the answer in a nutshell. I've found that as a "cheerleader" for a Bipolar staying POSITIVE and pointing out the positive is half the battle!! "HOPE" is SUCH an emotional healer in itself! I laugh at someone's signature that says that "That light at the end of the tunnel may actally be an oncoming train" LOL HOPEfully that's not the case!

I "cheerfully" went to Matt, my son, and told him that the doc had increased the dosage! Ah ha!! Thumbs up, we have a plan!! He actually smiled and returned the thumbs up!!! Yes, sometimes you have to be silly but it's a small sacrifice in view of what's at stake.

Again HOPE...it's a POWERFUL tool with this disease!
