Does staying level when you've been manic

Feel like depression? My doctor told me that when coming down off a manic episode and staying "normal" can feel like being depressed, especially when you've been manic for a year straight?

I feel very depressed and I don't know if i'm supposed to feel like this and this is what feeling level feels like? I'm so confused right now sad

Hi to you-

Just want to let you know that you are not alone. I feel the same confusion you do. Would I recognize a "normal" mood or me if it came along? Not sure......I have read from information on line that people do feel a depression after a manic state, but like you said, how do you differentiate?

My feelings go out to you....good luck on the sorting !!

That's an interesting thought. The definition of normal becomes a whole different thing in this Bipolar whirlwind!
I would think that "normal" would seem like a mild depression if we were compairing it to Mania.

It's like compairing an average person's life to that of a drug addicted Rock Superstar! Average Joe would seem "boring". But is he boring?? By normal definitions, NO. The Rock star would find him boring though because he's on a different scale, a different point of view.

My son is the one who's Bipolar, I'm just the caregiver. He says that mania is "fun". Yeah, fun for him maybe...But I can see how coming down from all the FUN can be a letdown until you get your bearings. Hense the depression.

Does that make any sense??? I'm not one of those technical/medical posters...I'm just me! :-) A mom....

I think what you could do to find out if you are depressed is to look at how you are acting (are you doing everyday things like cleaning , personal hygeine etc... these thing go out the window when your depressed) , and are you coping with everyday life...getting up in the morning , going to work/getting chores done. If you are not coping with these things then I think that you could be depressed and you should contact your doc.

Look after yourself , and remember , if you're worried - go get help.

I think sometimes coming off a manic episode we tend to reflect back on some of the behavors and ways we acted and feel badly about them. I think its easy to beat yourself up to the point you might feel depressed. And I know its certianly easy to swing from Mania to Depression - being a rapid cycler myself - I have a hard time with the notion 'normal' I am not sure that there is a true state of normal, I think its more important like smiler said, to look at how you are acting and coping in daily things. For me the biggest way I judge my state of mind is how intrusive and interuptive it is to my daily life.
