Hello my name is Vicky and I am 30 yrs old.  I have three biological children ages 6, 3, and 1 yr.  I also have legal guardianship of a little boy who has been diagnosed with bipolar and has ADD/ADHD and is being tested for fetal alcohol syndrom in January.  I live in Michigan (YUP it's cold)! LOL.  I'm loooking for support for days when I'm having a bad day.  Thanks for reading!

BTW...my son to has the BP & ADHD, but as I didn't share in the other posting for you, both are on the milder end of things. Which isn't to say easier, just slightly different from others who have more severe symptoms. Again, hang in there, it is a lot of work, but these are wonderful children when the medication allows them some of the control back over their issues. LFW

Thank you for the welcome.  Kbear is doing great now that he on the rispidal.  He has his momoents but what kid doesn't have moments.  School is going sooo much better now.  He was having a really hard time the begininng of the year.  He is getting some special ed which has made a huge difference.  The one on one helps a lot.  The school has been amazing with him.

Is it me or when a person with bipolar gets sick is it worse than someone without it? Kahleb seems so much worse when he is sick than the other kids.

What exactly do you mean, Vicky? I'm not sure if you mean physically sick or emotionally less hearty somehow. Because I wouldn't say we get more physically ill as a rule (in fact I wouldn't make many generalizations about bps -- we all experience the disorder SOOOO differently) but it's possible that if he's feeling down he's having trouble fighting it off. I have a friend who is often ill, and she gets depressed about how ill she is, and so she seems to stay ill longer/ get ill more frequently... it seems to be a vicious circle. Of course I don't know if that's based in "medical fact" but that's what it seems to be. She'll even acknowledge that to be the case -- her depression affects her immune system.

Sometimes it is also certain over the counter medications added in to the mix of their meds that throws everything off. My son as an example can not have anything with antihistamines in it EVER. He has to use things like Claritin instead, or just tough it out sometimes (or the pediatrician will decide he needs an antibiotic appropriate with the mix of him meds. Otherwise, the wrong interactions set him off for days. Plus, for a long time we thought he was sick all the time with a cold. Turned out to be allergies to certain trees 3 out of 4 seasons! Poor guy. Anyway, I would discuss all this with his pdoc and his pediatrician, and if they are not already talking or working together on behalf of your son....they should start. Thanks, I'm talking about physically sick. He is soooo much moodier than other kids when he is sick. It's like total drama. I guess being a bit slower than most kids his age may have something to do with it. Sometimes I just want to hide somewhere ( I don't though) so I don't have to deal with it.
