Hi, just wanted to introduce myself.  I am a new member, seeking to learn what I can about bp.  My 68 year old mother (who has been loosely diagnosed with Alzheimer's) may truly be bp.  

I have many questions but will lurk and hopefully learn.  But a couple to get out there-is drug abuse (mostly pain meds and anti-anxiety) common with bp and could some of these have masked the disease for awhile?

Does manic always have to be wild and crazy or can it be just very active, busy, nervous,'hyper'?

Thanks for joining the forum, I hope we can help you. I'm curious as to why you think your mother may be bp (as opposed to Alzheimer's?). Drug abuse is very common. Although I don't have numbers, I think a little research could get you those numbers quick-like. Manic does not have to be "wild and crazy" either, there is something called "bipolar II" which is a "hypomania." Here's a link:
