Hi,

I'm from the Ulcerative Colitis forum, but I'm doing a school project for my AP Psychology class and my topic is Mental Illness and the Media. Could any of you please tell me how you feel about how this disorder is represented in the media such as movies, television, or music? What are the accuracies and inaccuracies how Bipolarism is portrayed.

Ex.
Movies - Lifetime's On the Edge of Innocence starring Kelli Martin
Mr. Jones starring Richard Gere

Music - Lithium by Evanescence

I appreciate any contributions and thanks for any help.

I find it a shame that the only time the condition of BP is dealt with is in its severest form. The entertainment industry portray people as out of touch with reality, impossible to live with and crazy. The fact is, the severest form of this condition makes up only about 10% of those suffering from this. This is a wide spectrum disorder and there are such a multitude of manifestations. The fact that the most creative industry in the world has the narrowest viewpoint is a shame. The fact that the public in many ways gets educated about the condition from this media is a travesty. I hope the media and the entertainment industry eventually gets responsible and grows up and begins to show the realities of what BP really is, and how it is manageable and people CAN be successful and have fulfilling lives with proper treatment. I pray they put enough $$ into awareness and seeking newer and better treatments so that the process and path to wellness is easier, like it is for diabetics. This is the same things...chemicals out of whack in the body...same thing. These are my opinions anyway. I am a wife, and a mother to a H & S with BP on the milder side of this condition. It angers me every time I see this irresponsible unbalanced portrayal. LFW

Nope! I hope I hear from him before tomorrow night otherwise it won't really help me as my project is due Friday. I was really hoping to get some good insight, but it's not looking too good. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. LOL!!

The Good news is that I'm going to present my project on Monday because they were so many groups that had to present today. Still haven't heard from the web administrator, but hopefully (cross my fingers) I'll from someone this weekend.
