Yesterday I had my doctors appointments. I was prescribed Campral, Depakote, Desyrel, and Celexa. The doctor told me that the Depakote will help with my Migraine headaches, Campral with help with my alcohol issues, Desyrel will help me sleep, and Celexa is my anti-depressant. He also said that is would be ok for me to breastfeed on all of these medications, but when I looked them up, I found that two of the medications could pass through to the breast milk and be harmful to the baby. Does any one know of any good medication web sites that have an in depth description of the medications and possibly their affects on an infant while breast feeding? I really don't want to quit breast feeding, I will if I HAVE to, in order to get better, but I really don't want to.

I think the best thing to do would be to talk to a pediatrician. A good drug info site is www.rxlist.com but I would call your baby doc and see what he/she says. My guess, just to warn you, is they're going to say to stop feeding. I looked up Depakote and it said it is secreted in breast milk and I'm no doc, but I doubt your pediatrician is going to say that's okay.

Thank you Serafena. I called his pediatrician and she said that she does not want me breast feeding while on the meds. She said that two of the drugs have been proven to pass through to breast milk and affect brain development in the baby. I just want to be able to do what every other mother can do for her child. First I got off the meds 'cause I was pregnant and didn't want him to be affected, then he had a low birth weight, possibly because of the moods I was in when I was pregnant (I had to force myself to eat throughout half the pregnancy because I was so depressed and couldn't eat), now I can't breast feed him. This is messing with me being a mom, a wife, and a good person all together...I just want everything to stop already.

I completely understand. I cried my eyes out when I found out I wouldn't be able to breast feed. It's not fair. But you will be a better mom when you are stable and healthy. There's no such thing as a normal mom. Keep heart. You're doing the right thing.

Even though I do not have any children myself, I understand why you feel the way you do. But, breastfeeding does not make you a good mom. Taking care of yourself to be healthy for your son is what makes you a good mom. Actually, from what I've read, you ARE a good mom because you do want the right help. Plenty of women are not able to breast feed for various reasons - not just because of meds.

Hang in there and just remember to take care of yourself - everything else will fall into place.

Breastfeeding is wonderful if you are able to do it. But you are in no way being a bad mom by not. You will be being a much better mother by taking your medication faithfully and taking care of yourself. My whole generation was bottle fed and we all survived!
