My name is Heather and I was just diagnosised with bipolar disorder II yesterday.  I seen a Psychologist and now she is referring my to a Psychiatrist so I can get on medication.  What types of meds are there?  Side effects?  Do these medications make you drowsy?  I have been going thru a very rough time lately and on July 10th I got in a terrible car accident and broke my neck; C3, C4, and C5... I am very lucky to be alive and not paralyzed.  I was drinking when I did this and I can't remember even driving that day.  I have always had a problem with binge drinking and noticed that alcoholism and drug abuse runs side by side with Bipolar.  During all of this I was suppose to be getting married on Oct 31, my fiance and I have been together for 2 years and after my wreck he left me and called off the wedding... so my mania is going strong I can't sleep, can't eat, always have to find something to keep busy to avoid my racing thoughts of worry and panic.  I know when I come down I am gonna come crashing... I think when it rains it pours and I feel like I am in hurricane season!!  (lol)

Just looking for advice and support, because my fiance who supposively loved me so much turned his back and left me when I needed him the most and that my friends is devastating!

Hi Heather,

Welcome to the bipolar board. I'm so sorry to hear of the horrible time you're having lately. When it rains it pours, they say. Your boyfriend is missing out, and if he can't hack it through the bad times, you're better off without him, truly, because with bipolar, there are bound to be rough times ahead. You need someone strong. That someone is out there. I'm so sorry he's left you in the heat of it, so to speak. It's good you found us and you're seeing a new psych. Are you seeing a therapist as well? If not -- get yourself one ASAP. They're invaluable.

I just seen a psychologist yesterday, and I will see a psychiatrist on Aug 20. So I will have the psychologist to talk to and the psychiatrist to write scripts... I am just glad that I finally got some answers and know that I am not alone!! Thank you!

Welcome Heather,

After all you've been through I think it's amazing, and a sign of sheer strength, that you are already poking around on the internet learning more about this thing you've been diagnosed with. I've also just joined recently and have found it very helpful.

I'm sorry about the physical and emotional pain you are experiencing. With the medical knowledge and medications available today, the strength you are showing, and the willingness you have to learn about BP, I believe you will be able to soon look back on this very low point as a turning point in your life. I'm not saying that having BP will be a picnic, but like diabetes, it is managable.

You are right that substance abuse and addictions (and the devastating concequences they often have) are common in people with BP, especially when the BP goes undiagnosed. By arming yourself with knowledge, continuing to work with your Psych doc and therapist, and learning to manage the disorder you can avoid that path live a healthy life.

Thank you for the kind words. I am praying everyday for strength and it is coming slowly but surely. I will be able to heel emotionally when I find my own place right now we are living under the same roof and that is very hard for me. After two years it is hard to shut off your emotions just like that. I will manage BP, I have no other choice. about 6 months ago I was diagnosised with fibro as well, but in May I was diagnosised with lupus. This has been an extremely painful and challenging year. I just have to keep telling myself that everything happens for a reason and what doesn't kill you makes you better. I am glad to be a part of this chat room, I will cherish the support and learn from each and everyone of you.
