I just wanted to give a link to a site that is excellent at going through bipolar II for the patient as well as the practitioner. It was made by Dr. James Phelps. www.psycheducation.org

Hi Dana, Thanks for he great web-site. My son is dated a gal with Bipolar II . . . he is concerned because she is sleeping about 14 hours a nite and has slept for 24 hours straight. He is concerned that she is over medicated. Her doctor says that if she wakes up feeling 'awake' then she is not sleeping too much. This sounds like horse pucky to me. Any comments?

I agree Rosie,

As you and I know, sleeping too much can be the sign of depression or other illnesses.

what are we going to do with these docs!

Dana . . . this was her counselor!! and my son is worried about her. I agree . . . this has gone on too long. This gal is bright!! she goes to school and works at a nursing home. But it is not in her nature to sleep so long so often. Not sure how to help . . . or if I should just stay out of it. (I need to remind myself to mind my own business sometimes.) Blessings!

You know Rosie, I was thinking about it and couselors should not be giving advice like that. A good doctor should know that sleeping too much could be a sign. You said that she is bipolar II. I was wondering if she has a psychiatrist. Maybe you could show your son the website I referenced. I like it because it's very evidence based. And the Dr. that made it references everything he says with literature. And he explains a lot. If I never found this web site I would probably still be questioning my diagnosis. (not that I don't question it). But I understand it better.
