Do I qualify for disabily?

I was wondering if anyone had some knowledge in filing for Disabilty? I was diagnosed bipolar two years ago.I'm a stay at home mom.I haven't worked in over 10 yrs ...since I got married. Do I even qualify? I may not even have much SS points.

Hi ,my son has ADHD / Tourettes and he has been getting disability living allowance for abot 4-5 years now . He is 16 now so the money goes to him only , but he still qualifies , I suppose he always will as it's a lifetime syndrome with no ' cure ' .
I would say that in your position with confirmation from your Doctor of your condition that you would definitely qualify for at least middle rate if not top rate . My son gets middle rate .
We live in the UK and ' austerity measures ' are kicking in , and it is more and more difficult to qualify for DLA , but with something cut and dried like bipolar I would imagine that it would be no problem for you to receive it .

I called on of those lawyers advertised on TV and went through them. It just made every thing easier.

     I was diagnosed a year ago w/bipolar 2, bpd, major anxiety/panic disorder (i also now have an ileostomy less than a year). i 2 have wondered about disability.

     If u don't mind me asking, do u take any meds for bipolar, and do u see a  pdoc regularly? I've been thinking that would help with filing. If u find out anything pleez post on here for us.

I do take medication which is Risperidone 1 mg. fOR stabilitity and for my anxiety I take Lorazepam 1 mg. Also need to take sleeping pill Temazepam 30 mg.I do see my doctor regularly BTW I have an appointment next week so I'm gonna discuss the situation with.

I got custody of both of my children and the mental illness never came up. But again he was all about getting the money.
Serentiee: Having a doctor to document your illness would be very helpful in your case. Otherwise, it is just your word. I would also suggest that you use a lawyer, you don't pay them perse, it comes out of your back pay. It is worth the phone call.

FYI, I am not an expert on this but from what I understand, you are only fully insured for Social Security Disability benefits for 5 years after you stopped working. The general rule is that to be eligible for SSDI you have to have worked and paid FICA taxes for 20 quarters of the 40 quarters prior to the date you became totally disabled. It is often easier to think of this as requiring that you worked and paid FICA taxes for 5 of the 10 years prior to the date you became totally disabled.  If you do not qualify for SSDI benefits you should consider if you quality for SSI benefits which is the welfare version of Social Security Disability. There is no work requirement or time frame but there is an income and asset limitation.

 

I am glad you are going to talk with your Dr. re this question as they must deal with this issue frequently.
