My Wife refuses to go to the doctor. I think she's bipolar.

It is becoming impossible some days to live with my wife's behavior. I thought it might be menopause? But her mood swings are only a small portion of the wild episodes. I need some advice.

Her behavior is complicated to describe, I'll try. She is constantly moving things, organizing and stir crazy hardly sleeping. She constantly gets into states of depression that last days. Recently she has literally went into rage type explosions over just about anything. She has been telling me that God has told her to stare at the sun, she has been staring at a photograph for a month with a magnifying glass saying there are secret writings in the dark backround. She told me that she died in the Dessert and is a ghost. She actually disassembled the plumbing to our kitchen sink and took the pipe out because she said a voice told her something was hidden in there????

Then all of a sudden...boom, she chills out, wants to be interactive and do stuff. It's almost like a cycle every other week?

Hi, Jeff.  I'm sorry you're having to live this nightmare!  Dana is so right - have her committed now!  (You can legally do that against her will; don't worry).  She may be bipolar, but she could just as easily be schizophrenic.  Or possibly bipolar with schizoaffective disorder.  These can be very similar and sometimes get diagnosed incorrectly at first.  She will need to be cared for round the clock for several days, interviewed and observed.  They will also medicate her to bring her back to reality.  Her psychosis and loss of touchwith reality (God talking to her, telling her to do things, etc.) is classic schizophrenia.  But bipolars do get over zealous into religion and believe they have special powers or connections to the divine.  They also hear voices, but not the kind that tell them to do things.  Mostly a bunch of voices and can't understand any of them.

But definitely, do not try to diagnose her yourself; she needs professional attention right away.  If I were you, waiting on the family doc is a very bad idea.  Hospital, asap.   How long has she been like this?
