Ive been on almost every antidepressant you can think of. I'm now on Abilify. They are transferring me to Wellbutrin. I'm kind of nervous. I'd like to hear all of your wellbutrin stories....good and bad. Im hoping this is THE one for me. Thanks!

You are switching from Abilify TO Wellbutrin? Or adding wellbutrin and continuing on abilify?

Have you had elevated mood/hypomania/mani from an SSRI in the past?

I've never been on an SSRI. Is wellbutrin an SSRI? Also I've experienced a little bit of an elevated mood while on abilify. Nothing substantial.

I'm not sure, I think it is an atypical antidepressant? "Manic reaction" is listed as a side effect. People with bipolar disorder are more likely to have a manic reaction to an antidepressant.
With the exception of lithium and Seroqeul (at very high doses), all medications for mood affect EITHER elevated or depressed mood - not both.
Abilify is for elevated.
Lamictal is for depressed.
Wellbutrin is for depressed.
Lamictal is for depressed.
I would be asking my Dr why I'm on 2 meds for depressed mood (including one that can cause mania) without being on something to control elevated mood. Unless you have a history of NOT having an elevated mood from antidepressants?
I'm not saying your Dr is wrong. I'm curious about
the reason for his choice of medications. If you hang around here long enough you'll see patterns of typical ways Drs choose to combine meds. I've asked my Dr about
some and it's crazy complicated to me - it is how the drugs interact with one another.
Why am I so nosey? Because learning what I can has given me information to stay stable. Sometimes just knowing enough to figure out what questions to ask my Dr. Watching people finding the right meds over time helped me! I could tolerate a medication. But 2 members here had shared they had not tolerated the same medication. They had the same reaction I had. Their Drs put them on an extended release version of the same medication and they did well. I reported those anecdotes to my Dr and he was fine with me trying the XR version before moving on to try another medication. It worked for me! Without watching other people's symptoms/medications and comparing to mine I would have missed the anecdotes and might still be trying to find an effective medication. Talking to my Dr develops the trust/relationship so now I'm more comfortable asking questions and I'm getting better medication adjustments. When I am stable they help me go off meds or wean down onto low doses (in the case of Lamictal). When I'm not doing well we stay in closer contact and I might have a med adjustment every week for a while.
Keep talking to your Dr. knowledge is power. and sometimes it leads to good health

you're not nosey at all. lol. im still learning about
my disorder. i was just diagnosed in the beginning of this year. it makes sense what you're saying. and i have alot of questions to ask my dr now. my bp is mostly depression. im not manic much. is that maybe why? wehn i do have my mania, i take my klonopin and im calm again. do you think im on the wrong board? maybe i should be on the depression board? also, have you ever been on wellbutrin? how did you do on it? Thanks for taking the time to be so helpful and explain everything to me.
best wishes,
Tammy

I can't take antidepressants. I have an almost immediate de-stabilizing or even manic reaction even when I'm on other mood stabilizers. I do well with Lamictal.
If you struggle wtih depression and haven't had a manic reaction, it makes sense that your Dr would try it. Good luck! :)
