i am 47 and was diagnosed at 45...Bipolar 2, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression (which is a lot of the bipolar) /Extreme Anxiety, PTSD, OCD, Chronic Pain, etc...
You can read so many things and get a variation of the symptoms of Bipolar. A lot of the psych meds are anti-seizure or psychotic meds but work for Bipolar and other diagnosis. i do know that Depakote is a drug that has been around for a long, long time. i won't let my Psych put me on it do to the range of weight gain it can cause. Not saying that everyone gains but for me i won't take it.
Here are just a few symptoms from the DSM-IV Mental Disorder Book (and they are coming out with a DSM-V soon)...
*Depressed mood most of the day, feeling sad or empty, tearful
*Significant loss of interest or pleasure in activities that used 2 be enjoyable
*Difficulty sleeping or sleeping 2 much
*Agitation, or slowing down of thoughts and reduction of physical movements
*Fatigue or loss of energy
*Feelings of worthlessness or inappropriate guilt
*Poor concentration or having difficulty making decisions
*(with being careful of how i put this) thinking of the end
*hypomania
*Bipolar 1 has more to do with Manic episodes i believe, though with Bipolar 2 you can have also just that it is more of the depression side.
There are very good books out there on Bipolar.
