I applied for (and received) social security disability benefits when I was unable to work for more than a year.  With the financial and medical support I've been able to work much more.

 

Getting disability accommodations at work has been very important.  I have control of my work schedule.  I work by appointments.  When I'm stressed out, I remove appointments from the schedule so  get the break I need.  I can only work 2 days in a row.  I will have bipolar and/or anxiety symptoms if I work more than that.   Right now I'm working a 12 hour day followed by a 6 hour day, then a day off.  I am paid commission rather than hourly.   I have freedom to leave the building to calm down or take a nap if I'm struggling with medication side effects.  I have a service dog that comes to work with me.  I also restrict the types of work I'll accept.  When a type of work stresses me out, I refuse to take it.

By being self aware and adapting work to fit my symptoms, I been able to increase my work schedule from 6 appointments per week to 30 appointments per week.  I am hoping to become financially independent.  :)
