Hi Cilly! For me Lithium was a terrible nightmare. Had bad side effects. Took myself off it. It does have good results for some people though. The results of any med always is different from person to person. Good luck in making that decision. Take care!

follow your doctors advice. our experiences really don't add up to what your dh will experience. keep well. maybe some brochures on the medications may be a good way of dh getting an idea of what they are about

Hi cilly,
Everyone has difference experiences with meds. Would your doc be able to talk to your hubby directly to make the recommendation?

Hello Cilly,
My mother-in-law, who has had BP for the last 20+ years was on lithium for a long time. I think it helped stabalise/regulate her moods pretty well. But as with any medication that is taken for a long time, one has to be watchful of the long-term impacts and side-effects. I think it was affecting her kidneys and liver and so we had to take her off it.
This was perhaps 4-5 years ago. The new medication that was prescribed never worked as well and we were unable to get her dosage correct.
Now for the last 3 years she is of the belief that she does not require any medication and that she has 'cured' herself of BP and a list of other ailments/illnesses (including Cancer, hairline fractures, cataract etc...) just by eating the 'right' things and taking in lots of sunlight.
In principle I think that eating the 'right' things can play a significant role in determining one's health outcomes, but sadly, she'd way off the mark as far as what she considers 'right' and where her health is presently. It is really sad. We're trying to get her to see a psychiatrist so that she can resume medication - a BIG task.
But I digress...... just writing to give you a different experience - it worked well for her, but had long terms side-effects.
As the others say - different people will respond differently 0 you will have to try and test for yourself.
Good wishes,
C&G

Lithium is considered the golden standard for bi-poler disorder , but does have many unpleasant side effects.
Latuda is not lithium...latuda was just created... latuda is reported by most doctors as astonishing for the lack of side effects

Hi, I am on lamictal and latuda. But I have a 3 friends on lithium. Kidney problems are the most affected. Both of them are having kidney failure. They also have acne boils and tremors where they can barely write their name and eat. I don't mean to scare you as meds work different on everyone. I know that it really helps with ideation. My doctor said the next step up would be with lithium but I said no.
Sincerely,
Serenitee

I was on lithium for 8 years and it was giving me heart palpitations and messing with my thyroid. I was cut off of it cold turkey and the pharmacist helped me dose down. I found a new nurse practitioner and she has done so much. After trials and errors I've found the Serquel EX is working the best for me. I was on 300 mg but had to go to 400 mg because I do really bad around September and October. Hope this helps.
