I have been on seroquel for years for bipolar ll. I have several health issues. I continue to gain weight and I think it's from the seroquel. I have tried numerous times to get off the seroquel to no avail.
After I take the seroquel at night, I have a huge appetite. It is binge eating. Not sure if it's the seroquel or if this is indeed binge eating disorder. I have ALWAYS had a problem eating at night, ever since I can remember and the was before seroquel.
My doctor put me on wellbutrin and naltrexone and said this will help with the compulsion to eat at night.
Has anyone ever gotten off seroquel? If I don't take it, I won't sleep. I mean, a severe insomnia like I've never experienced. Even ambien does nothing in regards to sleep if I don't take seroquel.
I'm at a critical time whether I need to lose weight.. 20lbs at least due to a nasty parastomal hernia that has reoccurred for the 4th time.
Has anyone ever lost weight on seroquel?

Hi answers4me2,
I've never used Seroquel so I cannot share any experience with this meds.
Is the wellbutrin and naltrexone helping you? With regard to coming off Seroquel, try weaning off gradually. Ask your doctor about
it. Lower the dosage slowly. This might help you come off eventually.
You can also try diet and exercise if possible while using the Seroquel. This can help keep off any excess weight. When you feel hungry at night, try eating a healthy snack. Maybe some carrot sticks, or granola or something healthy that you like.
Be sure to let your doctor know your concerns.

Hi, I just started the wellbutrin and naltrexone, so I'll keep you updated. It has decreased my appetite so far.
I also have an ileostomy and gastroparesis and had issues with many foods, fresh fruits and vegetables to name a few. So, I basically eat white food, so lots of carbs and starches.

Hi! answers4me2
I've been on seroquel 300 mg for two years and I like the effect it has on enabling me to fall asleep but I have gained
a stone in the last year and although I stopped smoking cigs I think seroquel does promote weight gain. I should add that
I also binge eat but am beating that slowly - I make myself eat three meals per day plus a snack afternoon and evening and I
also exercise. I have cut the serequel down by a small amount over the last year so the reduction doesn't give me
withdrawls and I still sleep fine.
I have researched on line and the consensus seems to be it's the long haul to cut down serequel over the course of a few
years - not months.......Hope this helps and just wondering did you have problems around food before you started taking
seroquel?

I also quit smoking 5&1/2 years ago. So, that has contributed to my weight gain.
Getting off seroquel is a nightmare. I'm totally addicted to it. But, it helps me sleep, so that's a plus.
I started taking the naltrexone a couple of months ago, but LDN, low dose naltrexone. Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. It is like I'm happier, have more energy, and no depression. I can't believe what a difference it has made in my life.
I'm very worried that taking the higher dose might not have the same effect. Idk. I'm desperate to lose weight though, hence taking the wellbutrin and naltrexone in a higher dose.
Anyone ever tried LDN?

I've been on Seroquel XR 400mg. It does make you gain weight. I've gain 25+ lbs. I don't exercise so that doesn't count either. I did smoke a few, but once I started that I couldn't have one at all. I think it makes you not want it, which is great! I do feel like I want to eat, but I think it's like being stoned. You feel really sleepy and when you feel like that I want to eat. I usually just make myself go to bed. It helps doing that. Though I do have my moments when I do want to eat. I've been on it for a year and I wouldn't want to be on anything else because it's the one thing that has made me feel myself. So I choose mental health and happiness vs. being thinner. Hope this helps.

Hello, I too have binge eating disorder and am on Seroquel. I'm 31 and I began Seroquel in November because I have severe insomnia, which like you said even ambien doesn't work. I tried everything under the sun and Seroquel is the only med that worked. I have gained 25 lbs on it. ( Am I allowed to say that, I hope so, if not a mod can delete it) I recently have contacted an eating disorder in patient and outpatient team. I am struggling daily with bingeing and realizing how unhealthy it is. I have a good support system. Anyways I just thought I'd let you know you're not alone. Also, I have read that VYVANSE is great for BED however people with insomnia are not likely to be prescribed it because of the stimulant effect. Good luck to you.
Warm regards,
Kristin

webmd.com says about
Seroquel, "This drug may also cause significant weight gain and a rise in your blood cholesterol (or triglyceride) levels."
I took Seroquel for about
a week, maybe, and it made be clean the house in about
15 minutes. I just wanted to do everything I could. I had to get off of that.
I now take Mirtazapine anti-depressant and for about
4 years, 15 to 30 minutes after I took it, although I had just finished supper and snacks, I would want to eat everything in the house.
And it made my toes twitch. I did not connect it to the Mirtazapine, maybe because it may have taken a week for the medicine to build up in my system, and nothing like that occurred during that week.
So there was a disconnect between me and the side affects. One time I laid down on the bed in the middle of the day and soon wondered, "Why aren't my toes twitching?" I then realized it was the Mirtazapine which caused that to happen, not laying down on the bed.
I informed my psychiatrist, and she cut the dose from 15mg to 7.5 mg., and the overeating and toes twitching stopped immediately.
Oh, for insomnia I take Melatonin, along with my regular meds. I take 4 mgs. a night about
one hour before bedtime. Then I take one more 5 minutes before bedtime, and I can take another if I wake up at 3 or 4 or 5 in the morning and can't get back to sleep.
