I think you’re smart to reach out for help.
So, I guess if the meds have been tweaked, now that she’s in the hospital for the bipolar, that she has been on meds all of this time, which is good.
And you say she only goes twice a year to the psychiatrist because of the distance.
I go to my psychiatrist about once a month if things are going rough, and once every two months if I’m doing OK.
So if she’s been hospitalized for the behavior you mentioned, and her meds are being changed, it sounds like this may have been caught sooner if she had been seeing her doctor once every 2, 3 or 4 weeks instead of every six months.
Of course, the right doctor can be very important, and if she is use to that doctor there is a case to be made for that. But if she goes an 5 extra months between visits, that can have its problems, also.
Then, you’ve already addressed that (“Because of this recent episode the hospital and us are trying to find a suitable place in the city that she can go to on a regular basis”) but I’m just saying that I agree with that.
That hospital did everybody a world of good.
In my grandmother's day, my mother's mother, they didn't have that for Bipolars, etc.
Each state had a central hospital for mental patients, 125 miles away in my grandmother's case.
But they had no medicine in the 1930s and 1940s and some of the 1950s, and she went through agony, wishing they had just want we have today and perhaps take for granted: Lithium, etc.
And she wouldn't be in the hospital for a few days or a few weeks, she would be there for a few years.
She could only dream of taking a pill, like she saw people doing for some physical ailments, and getting well.
Just lucky, I guess.
