Thanks for flagging that article. I think that the higher diagnosis numbers is coming from better awareness by the pdoc's on what to look for; because in general they are now getting better diagnosis’s on these kids. I would assume vast numbers of kids who were diagnosed ADHD were really either BP or the combo of the two all these years. But the doc's only focused on the ADHD because they didn’t know better. Today they are beginning to. I know a child just even 7 years ago this happened to, they gave the classic ADHD med to him, and he had a psychotic break incident on them. Once the meds were out of his system, he was back to where they started, but from an emotional point, the parents were so untrusting now that they refused to get any further assistance for their child. Looking back, this is before my son or husband had their dx. Knowing what I do now, I can see that the child was BP without exception. But, today they would have probably checked for that first so that the right meds could be found. But, I do also believe there will be the poor family that will get caught in the “catch all” dx that some irresponsible dr.’s do by throwing everything into one dx. It is such a shame. That is why doing your research on finding the best doc possible is SOOOOO important. Also, if they can “isolate” genes for “gene therapy”, why can’t science start to find tests that can accurately measure all the brain hormone/chemical levels on a test? Why should everyone be flying so blind??? Can you imagine a diabetic having to “guess” to the right insulin levels to lead a stable life??? But that is what they have done with brain chemistry disorders for all these years. If they could just create that test then, like diabetes, you know which meds and their levels that would be right for you. Seems to me science is out their and capable of doing this, so why is no one creating these tests????? Well those are my thoughts anyway. Thanks again for pinging the article! LFW
