since i started my meds again some weeks ago things are normal if thats the right word.i started sodium valporate the only mood stabilzer ive never treid.taking a low dose of lamical.not the high dose i was on some weeks ago.still taking low dose of serquel.for the past three weeks everythings been fine.heads clear not sore or achey if that makes sense.racing thoughts have almost gone.my moods are fine i feel really stable.this is the best ive felt for over a year.iam not sure if i am stable or a bit hypermania.am not rushing around or anything like that.am well aware that things could change at any time.i have had mini highs when ive felt well but there dont last long.am probaly am hypermanic but i dont feel like it.anyway high or stable i feel fine.also how long do other peoples depressions last mine usually go on for over a year at a time.even when i feel wellish i still have symtoms.not at the moment.somthing am not used to.ive been visting bipolar websites and most of them say take meds youll be fine.or only have epioseds once in a while.or depressions dont go on for as long as mine.thats not true.anybody else have severe long long depressions.

Great to hear some good news and that the meds are working for you at the moment. In response to your point:

I have also read this on some sites but as you know it is not nearly as easy as this to manage the BP. My hubbie is BP1 sufferer for 20+ years, diagnosed for 2+ and has tried lots of different meds in that time, Effexor XR, Lithium, Lexapro, Epilim, Luvox, Zyprexa, Diazepam, Seroquel to name a few. The Effexor worked for a while then stopped and since last November he has been in a very very bad depression which has not really lifted at all in this time and as of today we are starting on another AD and a couple of Anxiety meds and I am keeping fingers crossed that maybe these will start to work.

So, I don't think you are the only one out there by any means that has long periods of depression. As I am sure you know even if you can find the right meds for a while there is a chance that your chemistry will change and they will not work for you anymore. It really just seems like a continual process from what we have experienced, I think it is really misleading when someone says that if you 'take your meds you will be fine'. They may help of course but you still need to do lots of other 'maintenance' things to keep yourself well and even then as you know it is an ongoing monitoring process to try and gauge where you are at in the cycle.

I would be interested to know how you cope with the long depressions, have you any 'tips' to pass on. I think when you have been severely depressed for so long as my hubbie has you get to the point where you forget what it is like not to feel this way, how do you cope with this?

Anyway, again good that you are well currently and hope it continues.

Depressive cycles may not typically go on that long, but they sure can.  I've just come out of an 10+ month bout of depression, and I'm only counting the months where I was in bed completely incapacitated.  I was depressed but somewhat functional for several months before I crashed and burned.  It does happen.

I am glad that depakote is working out for you. But my pdoc recently told me that most mood stabilisers keep you from going to high, but do not catch you from going too low. I am sorry you are feeling depressed, but as Ellie and everyone else has already said it does go away. It can however be a slow and painful process. Hang in there!
