Mood stabilizer levels

I went to get my depakote level checked for the first time today (been 3 weeks about??) Im wondering, is the theraputic level a set amount or do they look to see how you're doing and then try to maintain whatever level that is as long as it isn't at toxic levels...I'm confused...thanks guys!

There is a therapeutic level that your doc is trying to achieve. I found the information below from a site about Depakote.

The amount of valproic acid in the blood can be measured. Studies have shown that blood levels between 50 – 125 (micrograms/mL) give patients the best chance of response to valproic acid. In the beginning of treatment, your doctor may check your blood once or twice a week. Once your symptoms are controlled well, blood samples are drawn less frequently.

I hope that is the answer you were looking for, sorry I can't me of more help. There are a hand full of people on the forum who are or have been on Depakote before. Maybe they will respond and offer you more help.
