Path report in, no surprises

Well it's official, I am now a thyroid cancer survivor too. :)

THe good news is that there were no surprises, no node involvement and all 4 of my parathyroid glands are left intact. (They are not easily identifiable and sometimes come out accidentally during surgery). He said that node involvement is not as important as it is in other cancers, but age is more important. Under 40 has a better prognosis...good thing I am still under 40! He also said that size is less important too with thyroid cancer, that he feels there is no magic number that changes prognosis.

So I will see the endocrinologist at the end of July and he'll stop my thyroid meds then do a radioactive iodine treatment and then a whole body scan...and that's about all they do. I read that even thyroid ca spread to lungs is curable with the radioactive iodine, which is like a magic bullet to kill all things thyroid.

I am pleased that it is indeed "the good kind" of cancer, I was afraid they would find something else as a surprise.

So I am eager to get out of my 30's though....breast cancer at 30 and thyroid cancer at 39? No one in my family has cancer, not sure how I got to be the lucky one. Hmmph.

It's great you are home and all sounds ok! Sorry you had to deal with anything at your young age!!!! You have done so well taking it all in stride and living a good full normal life. We are all proud of you and stand in awe of all you have handled. Give Tavish a hug for me. Jimmy, my little Yorkie is the love of my life right now. There is a risk of vocal chord damage...first thing the surgeon asked me was whether I was a singer. Hardly! But I have had no hoarseness at all, just some difficulty talking at first due to tightness in the neck/ throat. I do know of a lot of people that had their thyroids out but no vocal chord damage. Hopefully she'll get the courage to go.
