Anyone else see this article? Sort of a devil's advocate to breast self exams. What do you think of this? Common sense says they are crucial to early detection, but there are some interesting points in this article...

Were it not for finding a lump myself, I probably wouldn't be alive today. Two invasive tumors were found as a result of BSE, and both were missed by mammogram. On the flip side, I have had one benign biopsy. A small scar is a miniscule price to pay for being sure.

I would like to know what the ages of the women were. I would guess that most women under the age of 40 find BRCA through BSE.

An interesting study, though.

I know that a BSE found my cancerous lump at 6 mm, pretty tiny. A benign biopsy is a small price to pay for knowing something is not cancer, IMHO. But, I know all those biopsies are a cost for the insurance companies. Makes me wonder who is behind the study. Will have to read the article more carefully. As far as I am concerned, BSEs is one more step in being proactive about our own health. What's wrong with that? Lauri

I agree ladies....mine was found incidentally. Had it not been found by me, I am sure it would be advanced when discovered. I was not doing mammograms then due to age, so surely I'd be a goner too. And had I not been proactive with my health, I'd be sitting here with a malignant tumor on my thyroid, none the wiser.

I can't say I agree with the article, but did find it food for thought.

I did not read the article, but saw a headline on a web page. For me, BSEs' are crucial for women. It might not catch it early-early, but it will certainly catch tumors. First one I had was benign when I was 26, just accidentally found it while bathing. My second and positive one could have been found much earlier if I had just done them! I might have not required so much treatment!

I saw this article on Good Morning America today and I felt like the rest of you that BSE are a life saver. From my experience most women do not do their mamograms like they should and BSE will get them to do it earlier. I think another thing that would help women is just plain old more info on breast cancer. I have to admit I did not know very much about the disease until I had it. I wonder why they would publish something like this, so many women dont do BSE as it is and now even less will because they will think it is not necessary.
