Hi there,

I am new to this forum. On Oct. 27, I am having a bilateral masectomy and free flap reconstruction. I understand this is a relatively new procedure and am looking for anyone who has had it. 

This is my 2nd breast cancer diagnosis. I had lumpectomy, chemo and radiation 17 years ago and was recently diagnosed again.

So, anyone out there?

Hi. I was diagnosed almost 4 years ago and my ps and I discussed this procedure then. I did not have this or any other recon yet.  As I recall, this procedure requires "micro surgery" that is similar but more complex and time consuming than a "tram". I got the impression that recovery times, etc. were about the same. Perhaps someone here has had this and can help more.

I had the tram flap reconstruction.  I think there are not many doctors who do the free flap, because as Judy said, it requires micro-surgery.  That is very specialized.  I am sorry to hear that you have a recurrence.  Will you need chemo or radiation therapy?  I did my reconstruction more than a year after completing all my treatments.  I am very happy with the results.  If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.  Good luck!
