Hi! Just want to let you know that there are new protocals for screening high risk women for breast cancer. Anyone who has a mother or a sister with breast cancer may be considered high risk. These new protocols include yearly screenings with mammo, ultra sound and MRI. Mammo is sometimes inacurate in young women because young women may have dense breasts and the mammo misses things. MRI is more sensative. They are not done routinely because they can be too sensative and show up stuff other than cancer, but they are helpful in finding early cancer in young or high risk women. It is not done everywhere, so you may have to go to a breast surgeon at a major center to get one. Considering your mother's history, your doctor should be more definitive in determining what is going on in your breast! A biopsy is the only way to know for sure what it is. Radiologists only use an educated guess to interpret a mammo, u/s or even MRI. Then it is confirmed with a biopsy, where the cells are examined under a microscope by a pathologist.
Remember, most breast lesions (80%) are benign, and yours is probably, too. But I would want to know for sure!
Good luck!
