Did you go to the dentist or just buy one of the football ones? LOL Some people tell me to get one that football players wear. But I always thought the dentist made one for you. Can you help me out with this one? That way I will know where to get one!

Hi Shelley-

I have had mine from the dentist.  I am not sure they were so easy to get when I started with mine, but I have seen them in the stores now. Mine is custom made, I am not sure how comfortable the others are. In 10 years or so, I have only had 2.  When it gets worn down (which reminds me of the damage I am saving from my teeth), he re-lines it to strengthen it again.

I am a bad clencher. The grinding they call "Bruxism", which I do too. Even with that diagnosis, there is limited or no insurance coverage for these under most plans. It might be a couple hundred dollars, but for me, it is well worth it for comfort and for saving my teeth.

Shells, Frayda makes a good point, regarding evaluation from the dentist. I would suggest getting an evaluation first, and then determine if you can buy a drug store bite plate or one from the dentist. I have a feeling that one from the dentist will be much more comfortable for sleeping. It will be less bulky and custom made for clenchers, not just for football players getting clocked in the head.

The one from the dentist also makes sure your teeth are in proper occlusion (they come together properly). An athletic guard that you buy in the store is not going to protect your teeth against clenching. The dentist is definately the way to go! Frayda

Thanks alot ladies! I will call my dentist and get an appointment. My jaws hurt this morning. UGH It will be nice not to deal with that again!
