Law concerning breast reconstruction....

Hi ladies!

A friend of mine in CA called me to see if it is a law, that insurance cover breast recon after mastectomy. I thought it was. I have found some info on this that I read as it is.

Those of you in CA, there is a lady with stage 4 bc, has had mastectomy (maybe both sides, I am not sure) she has her own insurance which I am sure is minimal as she works for herself..

But, the fact she does have insurance, and I am sure they covered the mastectomy, should'nt they be required to cover the reconstruction?

Please let me know if you know. She is quite depressed (understandably so) .

Hi, Gail. "Janet's Law" is a federal law. You can get a lot of info by internet searching on it. This is a good site for basic info http://www.insure.com/articles/healthinsurance/mastectomy.html Hope this helps.

Gail... I wish this law had been in effect when I had my surgery. My insurance covered my reconstruction, and even "matching" for my reconstructive surgery, but I was refused a double mastectomy, even though that would have been my choice at the time. I think "Janet's Law" has made a huge difference to women who face breast cancer. I hope it helps your friend. Please let us know what happens!
