What's up with the new BC guidelines for mammos and BSE's?

Sheesh. If I had waited till I was 50, I would have surely not lived to see the day. Shame on them.

I have been upset all day after hearing about those findings. They are absolutely NUTS. And to think they had the gull to tell ladies that a breast self exam wasn't necessary! If that is the case, I also wouldn't be here today. Fuming here in little ole Shreve.

I'm at a complete loss for words. What I fear is that the message will be repeated here in Canada. It was my own monitoring of my breast that saved my life. I was 40.

Read a news article online that not one oncologist or cancer care professional was on the advisory panel that made these recommendations!!

Strength to us for knowing better and speaking up.

I agree with you all. I can almost understand routine mammograms, but no self-exams??? I'm thankful every day that I had a doctor who didn't rely on a clean mammogram. I've been in favor of universal health care for a long time. This is making me question whether getting more government involved in medical care is such a great idea afterall... Don't mean to be opening up a can of worms there, but really! How could they make such an awful recommendation? I'd much rather have a benign biopsy than an undetected malignant tumor! How many colonoscopies are clear at age 50, anyway? Should we stop having those? And PSA's for men? And PAP smears? Let's find a CURE for it before we quit testing for it, for goodness sake!

Well put Bev, says it all.

The people coming up with these new guidelines make enough money to pay out of pocket (thanks to us tax payers) for testing should they want it.

I refuse to believe this will pass. I refuse to believe Health Reform will pass as it now stands.

Drs will still follow the normal guidelines as usual regardless that is said..........

Hi, I'm from the Lyme forum, but was curious to know what was the thought was about these new guidlines. My husband actually reacted more strongly than I did, when we first heard them! My concern is that the insurance companies will refuse to pay for them even if the Dr. still orders them. Those that we know who have had breast cancer were mostly under 50. I am still in shock that anyone could ever possibly go along with this!
