To all of you in the cold--stay safe and warm We're just getting thru the rain here. If it's not one thing, it's another.

Lori, I also had problems and found out that Windows firewall and Norton firewall conflict.  You may have to disable either the Windows firewall or the Norton firewall. I disabled the Windows firewall and was able to connect.  I don't know if this is the same situation with you but it's worth a try.

Ro, thanks for the input. I have been reading for hours and hours on symantec, dell, aol and microsoft websites...I tried about 20 times to disable the windows xp firewall, only to have my settings not match what they said to look for. Well buried deep in one of the sites, it said that the windows xp firewall is already disabled, and I do not need to do anything. Plus, they said with an aol set up, I will not be able to disable the firewall using the control panel.

I am going in circles here. I have learned a lot, but I am tired.

Lori, have you called AOL? They were the ones that gave me the info on how to get connected. I have had a lot of computer problems with AOL, internet security, firewalls, etc.  A few weeks ago I set up a new computer with wireless. Don't even ask.

Let me know what happens.

Ro, I may call AOL, but it is so hard to talk to the techy folks in India. Their accents are difficult and waiting on hold for an hour is not my cup of tea. I spoke to AOL, Dell and Symantec do far, before I crashed. I might call the Geek Squad, which is the help desk people at Best Buy, but they have a great gimmick and tech support.

Lori, I know exactly what you mean about talking to AOL in India. I have spent many hours trying to get some issues resolved.  I would get rid of AOL but the thought of installing something new again sends me into a tizzy.  Please let me know how it goes.

Lori, I had another though. As long as you are able to get online with the security disabled, you can do an online tech support with AOL. I have found that to be pretty helpful and much quicker.

This must be a common problem, as Greg's computer has also crashed from Norton's 2005.  There was much cursing and re-booting but i think he's got it fixed now.

He was going to call the Norton's help line, but they wanted to charge for the advise! Some help desk!

Erin, I have heard not all Norton installations go smoothly. In my case, it was actually the windows updates that crashed me.
Ro, I did the online tech support with AOL or Microsoft or someone the other day, and after 45 minutes, I was still stuck. It was hard because there was a pause of a couple minutes before his replies, and they were very scripted.

I know what you mean about switching programs, that is why I have not taken the plunge to get rid of dial-up and go to cable or dsl.

I am going to wait till tomorrow to try the next thing, as the late-night tech stuff interferes with my sleep...
