I am 43 and just got called back and am going on 12/6 for my appt. I am scared my aunt died at 42 of breast cancer and my grandma had it but died late in life not from the cancer. My younger sister is dying of lung cancer. I have never smoked but grew up in a smoking house. I have had back pain for years and recently my low back and hip hurt so you can imagine what is going through my mind. I just pray I have the strength to deal with what comes my way. I have 3 kids all in high school and a wonderful husband and I take care of my mother who has dementia and lives with us. I own and manage an adult family home for the elderly and am stressed out. I was also on my first day of menstrual cycle when I had my mammo does anyone know if this would affect results? I am supposed to be the strong one emotionally and I'm falling apart...

terr...Welcome to hw forum, a great place to come. You will find members here are so helpful and uplifting. Try not to stress to much until you go back. Give yourself permission not to think about it until 12/6. I will keep you in my prayers. Be positive and please post and let us know how you are doing.

I guess I'm jumping to conclusions and I will try not to worry so much. It has been a comfort reading other peoples stories and I will try to keep a positive attitude.

Lots of call backs get posted! So there are lots of stories with happy endings. Glad to hear that has been a comfort to you. As to when is the best time to do a mammogram, there are mixed opinions and conflicting studies. Some say that the beginning of the menstrual cycle is best, because breast tissue is less dense. Some say that is the worst time, because the breasts are more tender, and the technicians don't "flatten" the breast as much because the patient complains of pain. Some say it really doesn't matter.

Well I feel kinda foolish! I went in for second mammo they said they needed just one picture. After the radiologist looked at it he wanted 2 more pictures. Then they asked for ultra sound. I was pretty nervous but they said my breast have become more dense and everything turned out ok. I am however still nervous about my Left breast because it has been painful and nothing showed up on mammo but they didn't want to ultra sound it because they were only concerned about the right side. I think I will follow up with a specialist to have it checked out. Thanks again for the support this is a great website and I would like to continue to be a part of it.

You shouldn't feel foolish. Not knowing what is going on in your own body is a scary thing. And if you are concerned about the other breast, ask for a consult with a breast specialist, for sure. Your peace of mind is worth the asking!

Hi, I have a callback appt. on Friday (right before Christmas!) & have been looking online to get some reassurance. I'm glad I found this site! I just turned 42 & have four kids ages 1 - 9 so I've been freaking out about leaving them so soon (yes, my mind goes to the worst case scenario). I just had my mammogram this past Sat. so my wait isn't long at all but boy, this came as a shock. I can't feel any lumps & have no symptoms. I have been losing weight for the past few months--easier than I ever have & I'm at my lowest weight that I can remember--so I almost called a doctor a couple of months ago just to get it checked out but then felt silly so I didn't (I mean--I WANTED to lose weight, right?). I've read that's only a symptom if your cancer is pretty advanced though. My last mammogram was two years ago (because I had a baby a year ago).

I was diagnosed many years ago, but it was November 11. I was matron of honor in my brother's wedding late that September. I had joked with my mom, who is into all these health supplements, that I needed something to make my breasts a bit bigger for that dress I wore in the wedding. Ha! She told me later that she just could not believe that, as healthy and "glowing" as I had looked that day, that I actually had cancer. It's one of those things that you'd just never know by looking at someone. I actually had two types of invasive breast cancer. Once the cancer is advanced, or you are going through treatment, yes, you can tell that a person is sick.

I hope your callback goes well. It's not unusual to have callbacks shortly after pregnancy. Your breasts have been through a lot! Sending good thoughts your way... And congrats on losing the "baby weight!" Your fourth, and you're wondering why you're losing weight? They must keep you moving!
