I feel like an idoit - update on "found a lump"

I posted a few days back about finding a lump and going to the clinic. The clinic doctor told me to make an appointment right away with my family doctor, whom he figured would order an ultrasound right away.

I saw my doctor this morning who told me that he doesn't feel anything abnormal...that the lump just feels like normal breast tissue. So there I sit feeling like a complete moron for going to the doctor to have him check out my "normal lumpy breast". He said maybe I just have cystic breasts, and if I notice a change in the next few months, I'm welcome to come back in.

So...I'm happy to say that I won't be a regular member of this forum, but wanted to say thanks for the supportive comments I got from those who responded to my original post.

Lori, breasts do change normally. Lumpiness can occur during menstrual cycle I believe. Always keep abreast of your body changes. PUN on words intended. Always be careful and get anything checked you feel is not right. I forget how old you are, are you ready for annual mammograms yet or maybe it is time to have the initial one to be used as a comparison in the future. Right now the word escapes me. I am getting old, LOL. Hugs MK

Lori, don't feel stupid at all! Feel proud of yourself for being aware and taking the steps to have it looked at. Especially in young women, with breasts changing and being naturally lumpy, I think younger women are less likely to be proactive in this situation. My advice is to keep doing self exams at the same time each month, and get to know the "landscape". That way you will know if anything changes or feels unusual. That is the best thing you can do for yourself know.

Be your best advocate and that will take you far. Good luck!

I'm so happy to hear that you are in the clear now. You certainly already have your hands full and don't need any other difficulties or distractions! Take care of yourself and feel free to pop in occasionally to say 'hi' and let us know how things are going with you and your son! Best of luck to you!!!!!!

Thanks everyone,

I have to admit though, that I'm not 100% comfortable with the way my dismissed this lump as nothing. The first doc I saw said that I needed a ultrasound and I should see my PCP to have that done, then my doc says the lump doesn't concern him. I guess I accepted that at first, but it DOES concern me. If the first doc wasn't concerned I'd let it go. I think I lost faith in my PCP after 3 years of taking my son in with complaints of severe stomach pains, diarrhea, and fevers. For three years, he made me feel like a paranoid mother, and would say "well Lori...sometimes children get upset stomachs". In December my son wound up in hospital and was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease.

I'm sure it's just a cyst, but it's not just normal. I've never had anything like it before, and there is nothing like it anywhere else in either breast. Just for my own peice of mind, I think I may seek another opinion.

If you have ANY doubt at all, do seek that 2nd opinion. My surgeon told me if I had waited another 6 months, my situation would have been much worse. Luckily my ob/gyn sent me immediately rather than "watching & waiting". Do what you can live with.

Lori, one thing you are not is an idiot. It's makes good sense to check out any lump. Unfortunately cystic breasts do cause a lot of unnecessary anxiety. However, it's probably a good idea to get a baseline mammogram so your dr. can refer to it in the future. I'm not sure that agree with the "come back if it happens again" theory though. The impt. thing is peace of mind for YOU. Wishing you all the best. Luci

Lori:  I am relieved to read that you don't feel comfortable with what your pcp told you. I had been debating whether or not to tell you that I didn't agree with what he said. I really wouldn't have a lot of faith in this particular dr and his diagnostic skills if he dismissed your son's complaints for 3 yrs. Do you have an obgyn that you have faith in? If not, why not ask your friends is there is a physician that they would recommend. Go with your gut feeling and get the ultrasound done. Please keep us informed.

Never feel like a moron because you are concerned about your health. Good grief!! You know your body best. If you have a concern, it is appropriate to call the doctor. And, if for any reason you are not comfortable with what you have been told, get a second opinion. Good luck and please stay in touch. Hugs, Lauri

OK Lori we are back from the weekend, it is time to take action and find that other doctor for a second opinion. The way you describe it, it certainly sounds to me like you need further investigation. Don't you feel like an idiot for checking out something bothering you. Believe me we have heard of some doctors who could be classified in that category around here, tho. Maybe yours is one of them? Please let us know how it goes. Hugs MK

Hi.  I found a lump that was nothing which gave me a baseline for a month and half later when I found a new lump that was already stage two.  So please check everything!  yeah

Thanks everyone, for your support. I've been calling around to find a new doctor, but they're really hard to come by. I've found one who will accept new patients, but I can't get in to see her until the middle of July. Hurry up and wait I guess.
