OMG..my last 5 year milestone has been met!  I had my mammo this morning (ouchy!) and onc visit. All is well in the boob department and I officially graduate to annual visits. He even gave his blessing when I said I quit the Tamoxifen 2 weeks early...it was funny, he asked if I had finished the Tamoxifen....and was pleased to hear how long I made it.

I asked the RN about pregnancy after BC, and she said they know lots of women who had BC and had great success with pregnancy afterwards, no problems. She said if I wanted to consider it, that we should come in for a consult with the onc, to discuss the pros and cons. SOunds like a plan to me, as it is not in the immediate future....

On the down side, one of my favorite staff people, that I have known since my first visit there in January 2000, is retiring in September.  Thank goodness I am in a place now wherer I am ok with losing that support....

Thanks again to everyone for travelling this journey with me for 5 1/2 years, and I can't wait to celebrate my 5 year anniversary of the 5 year milestone!

Hooray, Lori!  Just keep on marking those milestones, girl.  We're right here with you.  I picked up my last tamoxifen refill today and go to the onc on Monday.  I'm hoping I graduate to annual visits then.

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS!  That is wonderful news.  I am just about to begin the 5 years on whatever they give me, so I can only imagine the feeling.  It's time to celebrate! yeah

Oh Lori, that is such a nice thing to see! Congrats to you. I know you had to leave there with a spring in your step. Again I am so happy. If you decide to bring a little competition into the life of my favorite airline steward please tell him, he has a full time job anytime he wants it. PCE can always use a bit of his charm. Not always easy to make the ladies smile that early in the morning. Most of us are running down the run way trying to catch the PCE. Some morning the pink boa brigade does not get rolling as smoothly as it should and its always nice to know we have his greeting to get us started on the right foot. Tee hee. Love the good news. Congrats to you! But I have to ask a little about the milestone. Yes, still trying to learn a lot of things about all this. I guess if you made it 5 years without recurrance, that this is a great thing? I don't know how to ask this.... if you made it 5 years with no recurrance or just the fact that you have lived 5 ears after treatment? I know I must really sound stupid saying that because I'm not exactly sure what I'm trying to ask. I guess just explain the happiness about making it for 5 years. Hope I didn't sound harsh or rude in anyway. I'm just trying to figure it out so in 5 years I can be extra happy! :-)

Kattbird, I should let Lori answer this, but I am going to stick my 2 cents in. I think most of us count survival from the day of diagnosis not from the end of treatment. Five years is considered a milestone because most doctors will say you are "cured" after 5 years. Again, I think the opinion around here is you have "no evidence of disease" -- our good friend NED, instead of considering yourself cured. Hope that answers your question. Hugs, Lauri

Anniversaries are so wonderful to celebrate.  I always felt that 5 years was just so long to wait, but the time really does go by so fast and I am so happy about your 5 year span.  Congratulations!! I am happy dancing for you her in Ohio.

While I get geeked up for most anniversaries in cancerland, and I can tell you the date for just about everything...like most of the others, it came and went without much fanfare, just another day....
I will post more later, but I guess we recently engaged in the ULTIMATE retail therapy, as Leigh and I have bought a house! Mine is on the market as of this week and his was up a month ago (condo's are hard to sell here). So, I am feeling a little tight with my money these days and not sure if any jewelry or other retail items are on the agenda....but maybe a little something??

The docs will tell you that most recurrances happen within the first 2 years, and then there is another statistical dropoff after the 5 year mark. This is evident in the follow up protocol for BC, where we go quarterly for the first 2 years, then every 6 months, and drop to annual at the 5 year mark. In some cancers, they use the word cure after 5 years. Like Lauri said, in BC, we just say NED...and NED after 5 years is a very good thing. Each milestone is another one to count, but 5 years is golden to us...plus it means I just finished tamoxifen, another major marker. This is the first time that I will go a whole year before seeing the onc, like a graduation....

I like the sound of the fifth anniversary of the five year mark and the tenth....and on. I know you are feeling great about it all and you certainly should be. Congrates LORI, doin happy dance for you... I will be done with radiation next weeks then start my tamoxifen and pray and hope I can join you in 5 years and we can do a happy dance together.... keep posting here though k cause I have learned alot from you even if I don't post alot I read what you write and you have helped me tons without even knowing.... yea!!!!!! I look like snoopy right now when he does his little dance... WAY TO GOOOOOOO.......skeeter1
