2 Mammograms and an ultrasound later...?

So I turned 40, and I felt an odd lump on my right breast. So I scheduled a mammogram. I was then called back for another mammogram and an ultrasound. They said the mammogram looked ok, but there was a spot on the ultrasound. I'm now scheduled to see a surgeon on Wed. and then get an MRI.

Does this seem odd? To see a surgeon first?

I'm trying not to completely freak out, but that's not going so well... cry

Hey tammid, im really glad to hear your mammogram looks good this is a good thing! This is what i think is happening they are not sure what the spot is and the surgeon/specialist wants to take a closer look at it and make a confirmative diagnosis as to what it is. It is scary as heck i know, and it is really hard to deal with the what ifs and not freak out. The spot could be any number of things so they really need to take a closer look. they would not do anything drastic unless they know conclusivly that it is indeed Breast cancer and to do that they really need a sample of the spot/tissue.They would let you know if it was cancer and they knew that how could they with hold information like that from you? If they did I would be astounded. I have been newly diagnosed so I may not be much help, but the one thing I can do is understand what you are going through right now in this moment. no matter what see the dr and let me know how it goes ok and if you need to talk i will check in here as talking to you helps me too =D

I was also wondering about getting a MRI, or just going straight to biopsy? The u/s tech stated that the MRI "is the gold standard, and could be very expensive"
If the best diagnosis is biopsy, why mess with MRI?

Hey Tammid, I already had my biopsy, I am going for the scan/ MRI and chest exrays on the 8th. this is to make a determination as to whether my cancer has spread from my lymph nodes to other parts of my body. You need the biopsy to determine whether there is cancer cells present, the MRI is to determine how far it has spread if at all. the MRI will also show any abnormalities present, so it is really a good idea to do both, as from what I understand is if they find cancer they are not always able to detect cancer cells that are present else were, thats why they do MRI. However, they havent confirmed you have cancer present in the breast so it is important to have the biopsy and get confirmation or woo hoo im healthy or the alternative which is you do have cancer and you are going to fight it and be healthy, happy and cancer free, positive thinking. The MRI is probably a percautionary procedure as they want to be sure they do all they can to come to a confirmative diagnosis of positive or negative. I didn't get schedualed for the scans till after my confirmation, but you may have a Dr that is very cautious and cares about you a lot so he wants to cover all the bases, I would put your faith in God of your understanding, your Dr and yourself =) and do biopsy and if they want a MRI i would do that too, and don't be afraid to ask them why they want to do it this way. I know it really hard to relax and wait the waiting is awful, and talk about yur fears and feelings it is ok to feel what ever you are feeling it is normal and it is normal to be scared. no matter what happens I will be around if you need some one to talk to or sit with you in those moments when the day aint so bright and the light at the end of the tunnel looks suspiciously like a train lol. We will have our moments many many moments in a day and they are all going to be diffrent some good some bad and some downright ugly, but im here to share them all with you if you need and want too =)

The best route in determining what's going on isn't going to involve going straight into any one particular diagnostic, but rather, it's the combination that help determine the specifics of what's going on, the locations, if it's spread or has the potential to, how advanced it is...

These things require several "views" (or tests) so that your doctor can get complete pictures of what's going on. Skipping steps means something else could be missed.

There really is a method to their madness! We just have to learn to trust that....

Talia and Tammid I seem to be one step behind you ladies. I got the call that my mammogram showed a 1cm spot on EACH breast. I am scheduled for another, more in-depth mammogram (although I don't know what that means) tomorrow.
It is scary and I will add both of you to my fervent prayers.

Hey grammy =) uh yea it is really scary! When i think about my mammogram i don't think alarm bells started going of for me untill they ordered a biopsy immediatly, no ifs and or buts even the nurse was suprised since she asked the Dr."right now?" is what she said. When he said immediatly I think thats when I thought ok this is not good. So being told they want extra testing done sends off all kinds of alarm bells hey? I really did not think to much about it though till i got the confirmation of the results back, that is partly my hubby though as he is a born optimist and it tends to rub off on me too lol. more indepth mammogram do they mean they want to do an ultra sound? I wont be here wensday so will have to wait for your reply =( Let me know what happens grammy ok, im going to pray very hard for you and hope that it is a triumph and happy news.

Hi Tammid. Did you see your surgeon today? If so were some of your questions answered? I had a second mammogram today and a sonogram is supposed to be scheduled within a week. I am freaking out with worry and I know you must be feeling the same way.
For me, it helps to share the worry with someone who knows exactly what it's like. Thanks for sharing and being on the forum.

Thank you Talia and Crampygrammy for your thoughts and prayers!! I have decent good news :)
I saw the surgeon Wed. and he is very optimistic. He says the spot is only 2x3x4 millimeters big (or SMALL in this case!!) He thinks I'm a little silly saying I can feel it but whatever. turn
I go in for a core biopsy on Tuesday and we will go from there. I joked with the nurse that the biopsy may remove the whole thing cuz its so small. The doc never mentioned doing the MRI.
Grammy, my advise to you right now is to just go to your appointments like everything is good and not worry. After my first day or 2 of worrying, I realized that worrying won't change the outcome. And now I have an optimistic look on it. "We be just checkin on things" cool

Anyone know how long it will take to get the results of the biopsy?

Hey glad to her that you are getting things done the biopsy results prob vary in how long it takes to get results back depending were you are and how busy they are. It took me i would say about a week to get mine back, well just under a week. im holding on Tammid seems every time i turn around some one wants a peice of me. in pain so not very happy camper today and havent been able to eat all day so that prob does not help. Keep in touch always look forward to hearing from you all =)

After a week of fretting over no news, I got GOOD NEWS today. The sonogram showed nothing at all, and the 2nd mammogram, the close-up of the "trouble spots" in each breast, were diagnosed as benign macro calcifications. I was told not to worry, and just be sure to get an annual mammogram to make sure there are no changes. It had been 5 years since my previous mammo and you can be sure I won't let that happen again. Thank you to everyone who listened to my concerns and responded to my worries. You are all strong women who I admire very much.

Here's my deal. I guess Kaiser tried to reach me yesterday - I have a 9:00am appointment tomorrow morning and I'm supposed to plan for at least two hours. It's because of my mammogram that I had late last week. They saw something in the right breast.

The reason they need to plan on two hours is because after they take more mammogram images the radiologist will likely want to do an ultrasound.

I had a mammogram right before we moved to Northern California from Southern California in February...everything (according to them) seemed normal.

Less than two hours after my mammogram last week Kaiser called requesting info on where I had my last one done to compare images - I told them where and that was that.

Funny though - the mammography tech told me that if they needed more images I would get a call in a week (yet they called in less than two hours)...

The weird thing is that even though I'd just had one merely months ago...something/someone, God, angel/spirit guide kept nagging me to get another one NOW. So I did.

I'm FREAKING OUT! Glad I found a place to share. I'm nearly 45; my mom was diagnosed with BC at 40 and fought hard for 17-years. It's been over 9-years since we lost her.

There are a few other familial deaths from BC, so I'm concerned.

I guess I'll update tomorrow - thanks for reading. Love & light to you all.
