I'm 23 years old and found a lump in my breast about a week ago that hurts like a bruise. I haven't been to the doctors because I was due to start my period and researched that its normal to get lumps when you are about to start your menstrual cycle.

It has yet to disappear but I don't want to bother a doctor for their time over nothing, I just know breast and all kinds of cancer runs in my family so I also want to be smart about it. I haven't told anyone about it so I guess I'm looking for advice. shall I leave it another week or just go in and get it checked straight away

You are not "bothering" a doctor. That is their job. Any more than you'd bother a banker to open a checking account, (you're doing business), it's the same thing.

That's why we have doctors, and while things are fresh and new, it's always better to have things checked out rather than ignore them and just sort of hope they'll go away.

I didn't know if symptoms sounded more like something other people had experienced that turned out to be nothing. That was all.

Many of us here have "lumpy breasts!"

I, myself, have had fibrocystic breasts since I was 14, so I became accustomed to various lumps and bumps sort of waxing and waning in both my breasts, in different places, changing in size and density, all that stuff.

They can be quite painful, especially around your menses. I remember mine felt like deep bruises.

So that *might* be what's going on. However,...I'd still encourage you to see your doc because he/she will establish a baseline for you, unique for you, your body, from which to map any changes.
