Biopsy after sonogram

I recently went for my annual mammogram. I'm 57 so I've
had 17 mammograms as I go religiously each year. I've been called back every few years for a diagnostic mammogram and or sonogram. I was called back for a sonogram on my right breast . My doctor went ahead and
ordered a bilateral sonogram just to be safe. Today I got a call from my doctor that they wanted to biopsy my left breast, which they didn't even have any problem with. My
right breast was fine. I had had all my previous mamommagrams at another breast center. I work in the medical field and now work for a for profit hospital where I had this years mammogram. I'm finding it very suspicious that the breast not in question is the one they
want to biopsy. Maybe I'm cynical, but could a for profit facility call for more breast biopsies? Of course I'm going to have it done, but wonder if my doctor only ordered a sonogram on the right breast or I refused to have both done. Would I have gotten the all clear? Has anyone had
a similar situation. Thank you!

Do what your doctor suggests. However, nothing is bullet proof. I have invasive breast cancer. it is very thin - like jelly - it spreads across the breast. I had many mamos, an many ultrasounds, a number of biopsies and MRIs and they MISSED the CANCER. I asked them to do a prophylactic mastectomy - the doctors told me I was being "silly". After the mastectomies, they found Stage 2 Invasive lobular breast cancer.

Nothing is bullet proof. So even mamos, us, biopsies and MRIs can miss it all. Also remember, the mamos you are getting are exposing you to radiation and can also cause cancer as much as they can diagnose cancer. It is a two edged sword.

Thank you for your reply. I have a biopsy Tuesday. Fortunately my Dr. ordered a bilateral sonogram. They found a 6mm lesion. My Dr. could have saved my life. I'm still hoping its nothing. The surgeon said about a 70% chance its something benign. If it is something it is a stage 1a or b and highly treatable. I'm taking one step at a time. Thank you again.

Sandra, I am hoping your biopsy went well & hopefully before too much longer you will have your results. Please come back & let us know what the dr says.

One of my best friends husband had a previous job as a hospital administrator. He was routinely asked to order the doctors to get more tests done or more surgeries done. Like there'd be a graph that showed how many kidney biopsies were done by each kidney doctor on staff. And if one doctor didn't have as many biopsies done as the other doctors, that Dr would be told "you've got to bring up your numbers."

Sad that we may be having unnecessary tests done just to reach a quota. Obviously we have no choice. I hope that was not the case with you, and that your results bring good news. Please let us know.
