Hi, this is my first time on this forum, actually this is the first time on any forum.  I am hoping you guys can help, give me info that I don't know or set my mind at ease.  I have 46 years old and approximately 3 weeks ago I noticed that my right nipple seemed to be pulling to the side, shortly thereafter it started inverting.  about the same time I noticed not a lump but more like a hard fleshy area just above the nipple area.  I called my doctor immediately and was into see her within 45 minutes.  My doc sent me for a mammo last Friday.  After the mammo was done the tech told me she needed me to have an ultra sound.  I went down the hall to the ultra sound and of course that Tech brings in Doctor to look over the ultra sound.  I asked both the mammo tech and ultra sound tech and doctor if they seen something, of course none of them will tell me anything.  The ultra sound doctor then tells me he wants to do a biopsy right now, he said his report to my doc was going to recommend a biopsy be performed so I might as well get done right now while I was there so I didn't have to come back on another day.  I took his advise and had the biopsy done and they tell me it will be about 5-6 days for the results.  I have now got myself all stressed out mainly because I expected a mammo but didn't think about ultra sound and never imagined a biopsy.  Does any of this mean anything or is all this stuff they just did (other than mamo) just standard procedure and a measure of just being safe.  Of course I am at the point I am just thinking the worse.......help please.

First of all, take a deep breath.  Try not to get all worked up.  Welcome to a wonderful place to get great information.  I am sorry you had to come here, but it will be a tremendous help either way. 

 

The first thing to remember is that most lumps/masses are B9.  Don't worry until you have something to worry about.  I know it's hard, but try.  The second thing is - be very grateful your medical team is being so on top of it.  Unfortunately, that seems to be a rarity these days.  Many women have to wait weeks for a biopsy.  You will know the results very soon and then deal with whatever it is.  I will be chanting B9-B9-B9 until you know.  Please keep us informed.

Hello Chloe! Like Kathy said, I am sorry that you had to come here but this is a wonderful, loving, supportive group of women. I hope that you have taken that deep breath (maybe more than one) and are somewhat relaxed.

I am so impressed with your medical team. Wow, to get into your dr w/in 45 mins and have all of the other procedures done is amazing. Plus it shows that they want the best for you. Each one of those procedures is necessary. Like a check and balance system. I know that the waiting is difficult. Hard to sleep or concentrate on anything. Please try and stay as busy as you can. Watch movies or tv shows that will make you laugh. The one thing that you might want to do is make a list of questions that you want to ask your dr when you go back. Also, be sure and take someone w/ you. That little extra support is wonderful, no matter what the news is.

As Kathy said, most of the lumps are benign. We will all be thinking B9 for you. Please keep us informed. Feel free to come here, night or day, and post. No matter how silly you might think the question or feeling is. I can assure you that we have all probably experienced and thought the very same thing.

You are not alone now. You have a great group of friends here to support you.

Chloe, I agree with the ladies above, you have a great medical team there! That's VERY good! Also, like they said the odds are in your favor for B9 results. If it doesn't turn out in your favor though, you have found a great bunch of women here and a lot of experience and knowledge.
Please keep us informed and hang in there. The waiting is the hardest part!

Welcome to our corner of the 'net. Sorry for your troubles though, we have all been there. Keep in mind that odds are in your favor. While it could be something, chances are not. The best way to be sure is a biopsy....so sense in messing around with "come back in 6 months". And IF, big IF, it is cancer, it can very often be 100% treatable! It is not a death sentence. Some people are treated for a couple months and that is it, others have treatment lasting a year or so, even others have 5 years of oral meds and others have treatment to stop growth of cancer, treating it as a chronic disease. No cookie cutter answer....
Hang in there....and try to relax, worrying now won't change the outcome...

Welcome to the club that no one wants to join.  This site saved me and others as well.  I agree with Lori about how BC is being treated more like a chronic condition nowadays.  It even leaked into my thought processes when I found out I had it.  I remember when I was diagnosed (the same day as my exam and biopsy because the doc was leaving for Japan the next day).  My first thought was a wierd one, but typical of me (avoiding the thing I'm scared of and focusing on something b9).  I thought "Oh, great, now I'll have to probably go on those walks and be one of those "survivors" who group up and are so committed to the "finding the cure."  I was totally sarcastic about it.  Funny thing, a few months later I did just that.  I would've paid you money that I wouldn't.  It was one of the most wonderful times of my life when I went on a weekend gathering of the women on this board, and to top it off, walked a survivor's lap for a walkathon for the cure.  Go figure!

 

I really relate with your anxiety.  I didn't admit to being that scared, but I was terrified.  I'm glad you got the biopsy right away.  That's the true test and it tells them exactly what they are dealing with.  Please let us know what happens.  I'll be thinking of you.

I agree you have a great medical team. Just think of the worry time you saved by getting so much done so quickly. Usually you go see the dr and then wait to have the mammogram, then wait for reports, then have the biopsy, then wait for reports. You skipped about four of those steps, and are already waiting for the reports. No matter what you learn there is someone here who has been there and done that and can help. Some of us had benign tumors before cancer, so even had that experience. There are all grades of cancer and again they are all pretty much represented here, so please let us know when you hear the results of the tests. It is best to get a copy of the test results because you never remember what you are told. Hugs MK

Thank you to everyone for their kinds words of encouragement.  Thought I would give you an update.  I got a call from my Doc yesterday that she had received back my mammo and ultra sound but still did not have bio results.  She said that she did need to see me but would not have bio results till late today.  I have my appointment Monday morning.  Hopefully I can get through this weekend without worrying myself sick...I will think positive thoughts.

I am glad you found us. We will wait the weekend with you..waiting is tough.

I am so glad your Dr's were so agressive and got things done so fast. That really is great.
One of the worst things to hear is come back in 6 months...grrrr. Hate to hear that Dr's
still say that.

It sounds like you have a great doctor and other medical resources that did just what they should do. As all have said before your chances are in favor for a b/9 dx. I will join all the others in your wait.

Well I have been for Doc appointment this morning and it was not good news.  I have a lump that is 2.8 X 1.76cm.  The pathology could not ascertain the type only that it was cancer and it was malignant.  I am to meet the surgeon on Thursday to have a lumpectomy.  So of course at this point I don't know stage or anything really...How does the size figure in, is that size big or small or medium and what does it mean that they can't tell me the type till after the surgery.  My doc did say that usually the path reports do state the type.  Of course my mind is racing and I am not trying to think the worst...but I am.  Any help would be appreciated.

Chloe, Please be calm. The lumpectomy will give you answers. That was what I went through. Mammo with ultrasound then needle aspiration and then finally the lumpectomy that made everything certain. I am not sure how size fits in as I know mine was not large, but had been very fast growing due to the type of cancer. I had a phyllodes tumor. They should know the type after the lumpectomy path report returns. Some people only have a lumpectomy but I know that the size of the tumor may dictate if a lumpectomy will take a large portion of the breast. That may not be recommended for you. My type of cancer dictated a simple mastectomy. Each of us is different. Make sure to research, ask as many questions as you can of all medical personnel you come in contact with and if you have someone that is or will be supporting you and be with you DO. Ask for copies of your path reports. They are yours and you should have them. Ask the Doctor to explain the report completly. Take a tape recorder with you to tape your conversations. Be proactive. This is your fight. Fight hard and remember the more you know the more calm and active you will be in your treatment and healing.

Stick with us. We are here 24/7 and someone on the board will be able to help you. We want to help. The women here are the best. I would never have made it through my B/C without them.
