My head has been sore and tender for almost a week. I figured it was because I am on sufasalazine and your supposed to be careful of the sun. I worked in the yard without a hat on a hot sunny day (stupid I know!)so I figured it was badly sunburned.  I have had shooting pain in my face and ear area. The pains were horrible and about every 5 to 15 seconds. The Clinic Dr I went to on Sat, cause I could't stand it anymore, said I had an irritated nerve in my scalp and gave me neurontin. Well, my scalp was so tender this AM that it hurt on my pillow. I got into see my reg Dr today and I have shingles!  Since I didn't get in right away, now the pain will probably last longer, and sometimes people have outbreaks all their lives. AGHHH! I am beginning to think that I will never be without some pain everyday. Be it my back, lymphedema in my arm, and eveything else we all feel with aging, GEEZ! What next!!

Gail: Gosh, I am so sorry to hear this news. Knock on wood, but I have never had shingles. But I have had many friends and some relatives that have. I know that it can be very painful. Luckily, none of them have had it come back. Maybe that will be your luck also. We are here for you.

Gail, MK has had several outbreaks in the past few years. From what I've heard, they're worse than the chicken pox you can get as a child. I agree that there is just no telling what this disease will give us. I'm praying that your outbreak will not be long.

Don'e scratch!!! whatever you do.  I am so sorry for this additional pain.  Prayers for a quick recovery and no reoccurance!!

Take care of yourself, shingles can become serious and make you very ill, so do everything the doc tells you to do.  The last time I had the shingles the doc put me on a anti-virus drug.  It seemed to help speed healing, but not sure if it did!!  Did you get any medication?

Hi Candy, yes, the Dr put me on neurontin and Famvir. It's certainly not a miracle worker, but I think it helps. How long did yours last, and did you have the nerve pain(facial or wherever you had it) that was like lighting bolts?

So sorry about your shingles, Gail. I have heard that there is a vaccine out there for shingles and recommended for everyone over age 60. I see my pcp next week for routine checkup and intend to ask her about it. Hope the meds do the trick and you are feeling better soon. Gentle hugs, Lauri

I have had shingles a couple of times, but luckily have never had the really bad pain associated with it. After I learned what it looked like I called the dr immediately and got the medication that works when you catch it early. As Lauri said, I read in the paper about the vaccine, too. I guess we are prone to having shingles because the immune system is weaker after having had cancer, treatments, etc. Hope it is much better now. Hugs and love, MK

Oh Gail, what else, huh?  I've heard shingles can be very painful.  I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and hope that you can get some relief soon.
