I am new here.  I was dx with atypical hyperplasia early stage 0 and grade 2 cancer of the ductal carcinoma.  I had a lumpectomy, and radiation.  My surgeon had me go to a oncologist to get on tamoxifin.  I tested positive for estrogen receptor.  The oncologist said I don't have to see him anymore because the meds he gave me will take care of everything.  I am still worried, do you think I should see another oncologist?

Hi and welcome-
It sure sounds like you were lucky, it was caught very early. Way to go! I certainly am not an oncologist, but it sounds about right...except for me, my onc did see me a couple times a year while prescribing the tamoxifen. I would encourage you to seek a second opinion if you have any doubts...but hopefully the 2nd opinion will mirror the first.

I certainly think you should find another onc. Did he say why you wouldn't be having tumor marker tests or ct scans? Did you have any lymph node involvement? Maybe because you aren't having chemo he doesn't think these things are necessary but I know that I wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

If you're not comfortable with it, find someone else. I think that SOMEONE should be monitoring you. Let us know what you decide.

I had a very small tumor (6mm) with neg. nodes  -- diagnosed in 1996. My onc. recommended radiation and five years of tamoxifen. He saw me every six months for five years while I took tamoxifen. But, I have not seen him for the past three years. I have had clean mammograms and no unusual lumps, so I feel comfortable without regular visits. But, if I were you, I would want to be checked every six months while taking tamoxifen, too. Lauri
