I came to this board about eight years ago because two years after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer my oldest daughter (age 39 then) was diagnosed and I was beside myself.  Well, she found some lumps near her clavicle last week and today saw her oncologist who had given her a five years bill of health.  He is almost certain it is breast cancer.  They did blood tests and the lymph nodes are not enlarged because of infection.  She had a CT scan last Friday showing the nodes enlarged, which was ordered by her regular doctor.  She will have a full bone scan on the 9th and a biospy as soon as it is scheduled.  Once again I wish I were the one facing this and not her, but things don't always end up as we wish them to be.  Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  Thank God Jo-Ann is here for a visit, it helps so much.  Hugs MK

{{{MK}}} You're right -- breathe. Worse than being diagnosed with bc is having a loved one diagnosed. You can be assured that I will be praying for her. Is this Carolyn? I'm so thankful that Jo-Ann is there. The Lord knew you would need some in-person hugs and sent Ms. J-A to help you out. Hang in there, my friend. We're with you.

Oh, MK, I can hardly believe it. I know you always said you came here for support to help you cope with your daughter....now is your time to shine. And to quote yourself, try not to worry until you know there is something to worry about....I know, easier to give it than take it, but you can do this! Let's take one day, or one hour at a time until we know for sure what is what.

How far out from dx is she? She did chemo, right? Maybe if it is cancer, it is contained to the nodes and has not spread beyond the local area. Let us know when the fire the PCE up and we'll be there for her and for you....

Thanks for your understanding. It has been eight years since Carolyn's diagnosis. She had no positive nodes but was given chemo, 4 rounds because of her age. She turned 40 just as she finished. She had a mastectomy so she did not have radiation. Her lump was high on her breast and was rather long. It was classed as a Stage 2 because of the size. She took Tamoxifen for awhile but it caused her to be really depressed which is certainly not her. She was not good about going for yearly check ups but she did go for her five year check ups and mammagram and all looked fine then.

I am not worrying until we hear what the out come is as to where it is located. So far the CT scan showed her internal organs to be ok. She has been experiencing terrible back pain for several months so that is what we are concerned about. Another concern is that they have lousey insurance. I think it pays only 80% after a big deductible, so the cost of chemo is frightening. The oncologist seems to feel sure it is breast cancer returning or the second guess is Hodgkins. Either way he is saying it is most likely cancer.

MK, What can I say? My prayers are with you. We all hope and pray all goes well and its not the dreaded C word. For now all I can do is offer to have the PCE clean, fueled, and ready to bring you the support that you need from all of us. I know I would not be able to deal with this. I have always said if anyone has to get it, please, let it be me. I cannot imagine how it must be for you waiting to hear about your child. MK,  I am so sorry to hear this.  You, your DD and all the family and friends will be in my prayers.  It is so hard for a Mother to accept her child's illness.  We feel so helpless.  The hurry up and wait thing is not easy either.  Please try and have peace and steadiness.  I know that your love and support will help her through this time.

MK: Wow, I am in a state of shock here. I am so sorry that your dd and you and your family are having to go thru this again..esp that darn waiting game. I am so glad that dear Jo-Ann is there w/ you. Don't think there could be anyone better.

God forbid that the cancer has returned and Carolyn has to have chemo, I discovered that if it is NOT done at the oncologist office, many hospitals will administer it and not charge more than what the insurance pays. I don't know their financial situation is but is there a chance that she would qualify for medicaid?

Lots of prayers being said for Carolyn, you and your entire family.

it is...know that we are here for you and Carolyn. This really sucks. I know
how it feels to have a daughter diagnosed with cancer. It is so painful to
have it be our children. I remember when I was diagnosed, and I told my Mother. The first thing she said was "It should be me, not my daughter"

Know I am keeping you and especially Carolyn in my prayers.

Deb T, I wanted to ask you when your recurrence was, what year after your original diagnosis? You are over 20 years out from original, right? Your story gives me the most hope.

The doctor said that it was definitely cancer and the blood test has now ruled out Hodgkins which leaves recurrence. Carolyn has the biopsy set up for Monday afternoon and the bone scan is set for the 9th. Chuck has his upper GI early Monday morning so we will be in Fort Worth but she wants to go alone. My independent daughter who does not like fuss, bother or emotion....... They both work and bought a ranch near our new house, the reason we moved up this way, so no she wouldn't qualify for help. They live in the town we moved from and come to the ranch ion weekends. Their insurance is through a small business situation, hence the not so good insurance.

And yes, Cathi, I feel exactly as your mother did. It should be me and I wish to Hello it was.

I'm with you and your DD.  I'm praying really hard that this recurrance is operable and she can walk through this.  We'll be dolphins swimming around you guys.

 

MK, ask her to record the appointment with her onc if she must go alone, that way you can at least be informed and not feel as powerless.

Oh, MK!  I am so sorry.  I will keep your daughter in my thoughts and prayers...and you, too, because I know this is as hard on you as it is on her!

Knowing that my daughters might one day have to deal with all of this is my worst of fears. You hang in there, sweet thing, and Jo-Ann, you give her a big hug from me, okay?

Oh my, I am so sorry that she is going through this again and she will be in my prayers during this new path of her journey. You to MK. I know exactly what you mean when you say it should have been you. My DS has been ill for several weeks and they cannot seem to find the cause. I feel bad every time he has to go through another test. We Moms and Dads have to stand on the sidelines and pray. I know the Lord is with us all and we are not alone. Hug each other tight and keep us up to date.

I have not been here for a few days and then to read this, My heart goes out to both of you. Sending you & Carolyn SOOOOOO many hugs. I can only imagine how you are feeling, I worry about my daughter and her chances of getting this darn disease. Just remember she is a stron woman and she beat it once and will do it again.

MK, one thing that comes to mind as I read the posts from our friends is the word "again"...and it suxs more the second time, no doubt...but think of this. You and your daughter have experience to draw from. You know all the advice we dole out to newbies and you know what do do...You'll be in autopilot but it is familiar territory for you.... we all know that the fear of the unknown is often worse than the actual process, so hopefully the "unknown" will be a bit less frightening for you both.

I just read your post asking me about my recurrence. It was 2 years after my initial surgery. However, I was having problems for 6-9 months and the doctors treated me for everything but cancer. With my initial surgery they did not treat me with chemo OR rads. I had them both with my recurrence.

Hope that this information helps MK, this worry on you has to be so draining. Keep the faith and say lots of prayers and I am sure everything will be alright. Keep us posted, we are here for you sweetie.
