Carolyn's bone scan, Friday afternoon, the tech is freaking

It does not sound good at all, but as usual these things tend to happen on Friday afternoon so no matter what, you have to wait at least the weekend.

Of course techs can't tell you anything.  But when one asks why you have never had a bone scan before and who is your oncologist and when is your appointment.  Wednesday?  I would insist on moving it to Monday.  Then he gets on the phone and tries to call the doctor.................  but the doctor is out of town until tomorrow or Sunday.......

So Carolyn high tailed it over to the oncs office and talked to his nurse, who was upset that the tech said so much.  She told Carolyn that if the report came in they would move her to Monday.  Later this afternoon she called and said she had all the paperwork and the appointment had been moved to 9 a.m. Monday.  And added to remember the guy was only a tech and not a doctor and to have a good weekend and try to enjoy herself.

So how does it sound to you all?  If it is in her bones what is next?  Is it always treated by chemo?  How about some of the hormone type drugs are they effective against bone cancer?  I will let you know more after her meeting with the oncologist Monday morning.

Darn that tech, I hope he gets a good talking to for freaking her out like that. Shame on him!
Sorry that you all have to have this added fear for the weekend, but try to remember that worrying won't change the outcome, it either is or is not cancer....and worrying will not change that at this point. Try to find something distracting to do. If it is in her bones, I think they use some of the targeted therapies like zometa, which will not have the chemo side effects. They may do hormonals too, if she is ER/PR+. I know they can do rads as well, to shrink a tumor especially if there is pain. And there is so much more out there today than when she was diagnosed 8 years ago...there is more hope too.

I really have nothing to add. I just wanted you to know I will be waiting and praying with you. I only wish I could add something to make the wait easier. Vic wanted you to know he is also thinking of you. Hugs from both of us.

I'll be right by your side, MK, with the prayers and hugs.  Waiting over the weekend is the worst.

I am there with you waiting, also.  It's the hardest thing - not knowing for sure.  It wasn't right that the tech did that.  You are both in my thoughts.

We are all hoping the tech was off-base. Where did Carolyn have this done? I usually go to University here in Cincinnati. I've had the same tech there for 12 years, and I really like him. He's very good to me. But usually I talk to the nuclear radiologist before I leave and before he even begins a report for my doctor. When I've had questions or concerns, I've just called the nuke directly and he's always answered my questions--no waiting for the onc to call.

Just a note for future reference.

I am here waiting with you.  I hope that someone says something to the tech.  Sometimes these professional people feel they can overstep their boundaries.  He/She just needs a little slap up side the head.  I'll be glad to do it for you and your DD.

Hi Mk...I posted to you this morning and I have no idea what happened to my post...Let me try again. 1st off, I think the tech was wrong in saying anything to Carolyn. Not the techs place to say anything...not his/her job.

I have been dealing with bone mets for 4 yrs now, so if you have any questions please feel free to call me. That would be easier than me trying to post everything I know about bone mets.

Please know I am keeping Carolyn, you and your family in my thoughts and prayers,

OH MK,
I am so sorry for all you are going through. There are a number of treatments other than chemo for bone mets. Hopefully this tech is very wrong and you won't have that to wrry about. You and your family are in my prayers.

Wish I had logged on this weekend.  All I thought about when I read your post was wishing I could just say "First of all,  breathe."

 

Those words of yours have helped so many.

 

I know how everyone made me feel when the tech's response made me feel like it was cancer a few months ago.  It wasn't thankfully. 

 

Everybody's freaking right now.  Let's all just breathe and remember the wise words above.  It's either cancer or it isn't and freaking's not going to change the outcome.  Keep us posted.  I'm really praying hard over here in between shivers.
