Many of you have heard about
my best friend, Stella, who lives in OH and visits me occasionally. Her husband is very, very ill and in the hospital. No he doesn't have cancer but he is diabetic which can be pretty scary when you have even little illnesses. about
four weeks ago he began with a bad cough and a fever. The doctor took a chest xray and gave him antibiotics. He seemed a little better, but he was still sweating like crazy and chilling. He changed shirts four and five times a day and sometimes Stella had to change the sheets on the bed twice a day. After another week they went back to the dr and this time he said it just had to run its course and it was probably a virus. Evidently at the office he did not have a temperature.
At nearly three weeks he was no better, he had lost 20# (his guess) and he could do nothing but sleep and cough. He barely ate anything. He sounded terrible over the phone. When they planned to see the dr again I told Stella to tell the dr a nurse friend suggested they do a blood culture to see what was causing all this. The dr said it would take a week for the blood culture to come back and he was sure he would be better when it ran its course. They also gave him some IV fluid because he was dehydrating. Of course that again made him feel a little better for a short time.
That was ten days ago. Monday night Stella called saying he had a fever again, she was sure of it. I asked if she took his temperature and she said she didn't have a thermometer, she had given it to one of her kids. I strongly suggested she find one in the neighborhood and borrow it. Neighborhood being out in the country..... She didn't want to bother anyone and of course there were no drugstores within 25 miles that would be open.
So yesterday she went to the drugstore and then took his temperature. It was 103.4!!!!! It just happened that the drs office called to see how he was doing. When she told the nurse, she told her to take him to the E.R. She took him to a local clinic emergency room and from there he was transported by ambulance to a bigger hospital in Warren.
The very first thing they did was take a blood culture!!!
I relate all this because I know they could use some prayers. AND to show once again you cannot let a doctor play guessing games. It is very possible he could have some really serious blood infection. Meanwhile his sugar count is running rampant. Really his life is in danger. I'm hoping tonight will bring some better news from her. Today is her birthday. They have been married fifty years also.
Hugs MK
