Hi, my name is Carol and I am new to this site.  I am 38 yrs old and my question is; I have a VERY tender lima-bean sized lump directly behind my nipple.  I can actually feel a lump just by rubbing the nipple area, but there is no redness, swelling, etc on the outside of my nipple.  It feels mobile and again it is so tender, that's what brought my attention to it.  I am not breast-feeding or anything like that, no family history of bc.  I do have a drs appt tomorrow but I am so worried.  Has anyone ever had this/heard of this,  does it sound like it might be something serious?  It's hard not to panic when you find a lump, esp in the breast. I would appreciate anyone's input!  Thanks in advance.

Carol, sit down and take a deep breath. We all know just what you have running through your mind right now. You have already taken the most important first step, you have made a dr appointment.

 

Everyone on this board has had a different experience when they discovered something questionable. In my case, it was not a discernable lump, it was a large mass.

 

I'll be hoping that it is nothing more than a cyst. If you have to have a biopsy, please stay with us. We've all gone through that but, as our dear MaryK will tell you, don't worry until you have something to worry about.

Carol, JoAnn gives good advice. Also, keep in mind it can be just plain old nothing! The lump could be normal lumpy tissue, and a coincidence that there is ternderness there. 80% of breast lumps are benign, so the odds are in your favor.

And as JoAnn said, all of us had different experiences. My tumor was round and firm, felt like a walnut in oatmeal. It was distinct, but not particularly tender. 30 of us will probably report about 25 different scenarios, so there is no way to tell.

Chances are this is nothing to worry about...but please do not be satisfied if the doctor just tells you it is a cyst and to go home since you are low risk. Only 5% of breast cancers are the "inherited" type, and many of us here are in our 30's. The doctor cannot tell what it is without doing tests, and he should start with a mammogram and ultrasound.

Odds are in your favor.....but be your own best advocate!

Hi Carol, All I can do is echo the advice of Jo-Ann and Lori. We all know the panic you are feeling right now. But, you have done the right thing in getting to the doctor to have this checked out. The gals before me gave you great advice. I totally agree with Lori when she said about 25 out of 30 having different scenerios. So take a deep breathe like Jo-Ann said, and we will do the praying and sending you positive vibes for you.

Please let us know how your appointment went. We will be watching to find out how things went.

Let's see your appointment is today. I sure hope you will get back with us after and let us know what your doctor says. IMHO the best lump is the lump removed so you know what it is............ I will keep you in my thoughts today and hope you are getting good testing and good advice. We are here to help explain and support you. Yes, I am known for saying, "Don't worry until you know you have something to worry about."

Hi Carol,

 

I'm praying that it's nothing to worry about.  But I echo MK's advice.  The best lump is a lump that is removed, especially if it's tender.  Good luck.
