Surgery date for ooph and....

questions on a hysterectomy.... my surgery date is 12/15 for the umbilical hernia repair and bilateral ooph.  YAY. FINALLY.  Ob/gyn wants to remove uterus IF it is easy to get to, and can be done laparoscopically. (sp?)

Just wondering here if anyone has had the uterus removed via lapar. and if that increases recovery time a great deal.  I am not sure about having that out yet... he said he'd put it down as a possible and I can let him know if I change my mind.

Stupid question, but does removing the uterus affect sex? I don't think so but I'm not sure?  He said he'd leave my cervix...

thanks ladies... I'm sorry I havent been on the board as much but i think of you all, and i am so sorry there has been so much dissention here in the last couple months...  :-(   That makes me so sad... but i love ya all!

I'm considering similar surgery.  I'm going to look into laproscopic hysterectomy.  I've been advocating for a hysterectomy with my oopherectomy....until....you said something about sex?????????  Hello!  That's something I'd like an answer to.  I'm very glad you brought the question up!!!!!!! 

 

My appointments are this saturday and next tuesday, to talk it over with the team.  I'll keep an eye on this post!

Good for you Shell for making the decision that will put you more at ease!  My tah/bso is next Thursday, the 18th.  I cann't have it done by lap because my uterus is tipped.  Unfortunately, I have to have an incision.  My recoop time is supposed to be 6-8 wks off work.  I think it MAY be slightly shorter if you can get a lap.  Get on the hystersister.com web site and there won't be any questions that someone cannot answer for you - or at least tell you how it was with them.  As far as the sex thing - your uterus won't affect it at all.  Good luck to you Shelly and my prayers are with you!

Having a hysterectomy didn't affect MY sex drive when I was 36, but I don't think anything would have then!! I had my cervix removed too. Am I about to learn something new at 56? Did my cervix play some important role??? I thought it was G spots and stuff. LOL

Best of luck with it all. Stef. I had the "big" cut for various reasons, but that's one where it you don't have to be cut, don't be cut! That one was painful for a while, and no driving for six weeks - not good.

thanks all, i am definitely NOT wanting to have an incision if i don't have to... i want this to be easy and a couple days recovery. the surgeon said the umbilical hernia is a small one, which is good. i hope to be home the same day, so the kids won't have to worry about me overnight.

lori, thanks for your good wishes, i know we are at opposite ends of the spectrum on this one, but i am so glad we can discuss stuff like that without things blowing up, (as they sometimes do on this board unfortunately).

Stef, for sure! I always think the best for each of us is to research, ask questions, get informed....consider the facts for your personal situation....and make the decision you think is best for you. And don't look back!

This is a very personal decision, and you and I do feel differently about it...but we are different people with different needs and situations....and while your decision may not be right for me, all I can do is support you in your quest to follow your heart. I just want you (or anyone) to make the decisions based on facts and not just emotion, and to be at peace with our decisions. And I am truly happy you made the decision that is best for you, and you seem at peace with it.

I'm certainly no doctor, but it's my understanding that most lap surgeries decrease the healing time simply because there is less cutting involved. I've had lap surgery, and it didn't take long to recover from it. But every body is different. I hope you'll check with the doctor. Good luck!

I had a hysterectomy done vaginally when I was 42 and have never regretted it one bit, that was 16 years before breast cancer. I had it done because a another doctor told me I needed repair and without a hysterectomy a repair wouldn't hold well. It turned out the pathology showed a precancerous conditon. The doctor told me after surgery that he really had reservations about doing a hysterctomy for a repair but since I had seemed so sure he had agreed. So evidently it was really good that I had the surgery. Sending prayers that all will go well. Hugs MK

Stef, I can't help with your questions, but I sure can offer my support. Once again, you need to do what's best for you. I've had laparoscopic surgery and it is an easy recovery compared to the other. However, you need to be prepared for lots of gas pains and the only thing that helps that it moving, moving and more moving around. I swear to you I felt like I had gas bubbles in my brain, LOL!! So know that in advance and I think you'll do fine physically. Sending you support hugs, Luci
