1st chemo today

Had the 1st session today.  It lasted about 3 hours.  Seemed to go fine.  So far, no side effects, but I know they don't always kick in right away.  They gave me something for nausea.  Hopefully tomorrow will be OK, too.  I was tired when I got home, so I took a nap.  Love naps! tongue

 

I'm getting 3 drugs - 5FU(fluorouracil), Epirubicin, Cytoxan.  Once every 3 weeks, 4 times.  But, I found out today I have to go back next Tuesday for another dose of 5FU.  After this treatment is done, then the onc. said I would get Taxotere.  Not sure for how long.

 

I can't remember if I posted that I finally found out that the cancer is HR+ and Her2Neu-.  They told me that's a good thing, because the chemo is more effective.

 

That's it for now.  I'll check back tomorrow and let you know how I'm feeling.

Kathy, praying all goes smoothly for you. Don't wait for nausea to hit. I would just go ahead and take the meds for a few days. It is easier to control that way. After your second treatment, you can better judge if you will get a bit of nausea or not. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids. Don't want that stuff hanginig around your kidneys, bladder, etc. Good luck, nap away...

Well first thing you want to do is drink lots of apple cranberry! That really keeps you cleaned out with that stuff. But if you can not handle that, drink anything you can to get it out. Next do not wait until your sick. Take your meds this time to see how you are going to be. The day of chemo and the next day were my days to eat. I could eat anything and be fine. Day three I would get waffled. Could not eat meat and in general nothing tasted the way it should. I learned not to plan much for me the third day. Everyone is different all you need to do the first time is take your medicine and drink liquid and my onc had me take a bit of Milk of Mag. After he puts that stuff in he goes on and on about how he wants it out again. Keep a record. Next treatment you will know where the highs and lows on your roller coaster are. No side effects so far...hooray! My chemo was different, but I found that each cycle was identical. I had a touch of nausea around 11:00 pm on the night of chemo, and none after that. I was very tired for the next couple days, and had a few annoying things like wacky taste buds and reflux for a few days, but that was it. Business as usual for me...I did learn that Mylanta can give you the runs...so if the reflux hits you, take caution with the ant-acids!

The fear of the first unknown chemo is often worse than the treatment itself...hope that's true for you and that the rest will be a piece of cake.

I did not have chemo, but my daughter did. She had minimal side effects. She complained about tiredness as much as anything. I hope you do well in all your treatments. Hugs MK

So glad that you are feeling ok so far. My effects usually started hitting at about 36 - 48 hours. I generally just felt "crappy" - there's no other way to describe it - for about 4 - 5 days. Never made me vomit, but felt like I wanted to. Mostly just layed on the couch and didn't move. Drink lots of water. After a time, I couldn't drink water because it had that metallic taste, so I switched to lemonade and also found it easier to drink through a straw.

Day 2 - I've had a little nausea, but I took the meds they gave me (samples) and not sure if it helps or not.  I have 2 prescriptions as back ups, in case this one doesn't work or it gets worse.  So far, it's manageable.  Other than that, I'm feeling OK.  I am drinking water and have other juices I can drink, also.  I might go buy some ginger, because I read in some of the literature they gave me that it can help with nausea.  I can make a ginger tea and that way I get both benefits - ginger and water.  I have some pickled ginger to try, as well.  I'll let you know if it helps.

Hi Kathy,

I'm glad you're doing OK. I was glad to see that the second day was not too bad. Hang in there, sweetheart. You have one less treatment to look forward to.
