I had a whole long post & LOST IT. grrrrr Lemme try this again LOL
Hi Michelle-I had my chemo at U of M but was NOT impressed. My oncology appts took forever--typically over 2 hours, no matter what time of day. My onc was Anne Schott. She was OK. Not Miss Friendly, nor was the infusion staff when I was there. Keep in mind that this was almost 8 years ago & I am sure they have had multiple staff turnovers since then.
For an onc appt, the wait was typically 45+ minutes in the outer waiting room. Then a medical assistant would do my vital signs & put me into a room, where I would wait for another 30+ minutes. Being a teaching institution, I would then see a medical student who would take my history & do an exam. More waiting. Then the Nurse Practitioner, who would also take a history. Then a Fellow would come in & do the same as the med student. A Fellow is a doc who has finished their 4 years of residency, but adds another year to specialize. Finally, Dr. Schott would come in, review what everyone else had found, do a quick exam & I was out the door.
Treatment is basically the same wherever you go in our area. It is important for you to find docs with whom you feel you have trust, a connection & with whom you can build a working relationship You may have to "try on" a number of them before you get a good fit. I am on my third oncologist LOL. I went through Schott at U of M, Goodman at Providence & am now with Elaine Chottiner at St Jo Mercy Ann Arbor.
I see Chottiner in Brighton, on Grand River. They have an infusion center, too. She is awesome. She is very knowledgeable & approachable. She isn't intimidated if I question something & she is more than willing to discuss things, rather than just telling me what to do. I feel like I am a partner in my care.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Feel free to email if you'd like. I also have a BC website that you might find helpful http://members.tripod.com/mikki630-ivil/
Hugs, Michele
