I'd been putting off my first mammogram (I'm 44) but finally went in a few weeks ago. Radiology called me back and wants me to return for an ultrasound due to a "4 cm mass" in my right breast. Immediately I felt the breast and sure enough, there is a good-size lump there, the size of a large grape or a medium sized walnut. The first ultrasound appointment I could get will be almost a month from the mammogram.
My primary care doctor felt it and said it is probably a fibroadenoma, but I'm still worried. Yes, it's mobile, painless, and smooth edged, but then its so large! Right now I am dealing with a cervical cancer diagnosis so of course anything that suggests MORE cancer is sending me over the mental edge. My question is this - I've read that they often take a "wait and see" approach with fibroadenoma, (assuming that's what it is) but given my age and the size of the mass will they remove it? The waiting is killing me. I want to know exactly what I'm dealing with, ASAP. And if it is going to be removed I'm stressed about scheduling surgery around my other upcoming cancer surgeries. Any advice, or just comforting words?
